Julien Canal (born July 15, 1982 in Le Mans ) is a French racing driver . In 2010, 2011 and 2012 he achieved class wins at the Le Mans 24-hour race . He competed in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) from 2012 to 2015 .

Career

Canal began his motorsport career in karting in 2000 , where he remained active until 2002. In 2003 Canal switched to formula racing . He entered the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup for the third race with CD Sport and was 30th in the drivers' standings. In addition, he started in individual races of the German and French Formula Renault . In 2004 Canal switched to Graff Racing . He finished 24th in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup, while his team-mate Simon Pagenaud was second overall. In the French Formula Renault, he reached 21st place overall. In 2005 Canal stayed with Graff Racing. In the Eurocup he improved to 16th place overall. In the French Formula Renault he was 14th. 2006 Canal joined Graff Racing in the French Formula Renault. With a podium placement, he was sixth overall. He also made two guest starts in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup.

In 2007 Canal switched to GT racing. For Graff Racing he started in the French Porsche Carrera Cup and finished ninth overall. In 2008 Canal contested his second season in the French Porsche Carrera Cup for Graff Racing. He reached tenth place in the overall ranking. He also took part in races in the French GT Championship and the FIA GT Championship for DKR Engineering . In 2009 Canal improved to eighth place overall for Graff Racing starting in the French Porsche Carrera Cup. He also made his debut in Formula Le Mans in endurance racing.

In 2010 Canal started for Graff Racing in the French GT Championship. He finished seventh overall with two wins. He also made his debut for Larbre Compétition in 2010 at the Le Mans 24 Hours . He won the GT1 class together with Roland Bervillé and Gabriele Gardel . He also drove once for Larbre Compétition in the Le Mans Series and also won the GT1 class. In 2011 Canal competed in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC) for Larbre Compétition . Together with Patrick Bornhauser and Gardel, he won the LMGTE-Am classification twice, including at the Le Mans 24-hour race .

In 2012 Canal took part in the newly founded FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) for Larbre Compétition . Together with Bornhauser and Pedro Lamy , he won the LMGTE-Am classification three times, including the Le Mans 24-hour race . In the drivers' world championship he was together with Bornhauser 56th 2013 Canal stayed with Larbre Compétition in the FIA ​​World Endurance Championship. Together with Bornhauser, he finished the season in 26th place in the GT World Cup.

In 2014 Canal switched to the LMP2 class of the FIA ​​World Endurance Championship and was given a cockpit with the G-Drive Racing team, which is overseen by OAK Racing . Together with his team mates Olivier Pla and Roman Russinow , he won the LMP2 class four times. The trio reached 15th place in the drivers' world championship. Canal also took part in a Blancpain Endurance Series race for SOFREV Auto Sport Promotion . In 2015 Canal and Russinow stayed with G-Drive Racing in the FIA ​​World Endurance Championship. The two got a new teammate in Sam Bird . The trio won the LMP2 class four times. The three drivers were tenth in the drivers' world championship.
