The GP2 round in Barcelona 2014 took place from May 9th to 11th at the Circuit de Catalunya in Montmeló and was the second round of the 2014 GP2 series .

Reports

background

The event took place in the framework of the Spanish Grand Prix .

After the run in as-Sachir , Jolyon Palmer led the drivers' standings with ten points ahead of Julian Leal and 13 points ahead of Stoffel Vandoorne . DAMS led the team standings with four points ahead of Carlin and eleven points ahead of the ART Grand Prix .

There were three changes to the starters for this run from the previous run: Tom Dillmann replaces André Negrão , Tio Ellinas took over the cockpit from Jon Lancaster and Sergio Canamasas took over for Axcil Jefferies . For Ellinas it was the debut in the GP2 series, he previously drove in the GP3 series, in which he was fourth overall. Dillmann and Canamasas returned after a race break.

During the race in Barcelona, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (orange) and P Zero Soft (yellow) as well as Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

Qualifying

Stéphane Richelmi secured pole position in front of his team-mate Jolyon Palmer . Stefano Coletti drove the third fastest lap .

Main race

The start of the race was canceled after one of the drivers stalled the engine. When starting the second warm-up lap, three other drivers stopped. Richelmi, Takuya Izawa , Stoffel Vandoorne and Facu Regalia were the drivers who stalled the engine and were then pushed into the pit lane from where they started the race. In the pit lane, these drivers switched to the hard tire compound. The race distance has been shortened by one lap due to the additional introductory lap.

After the second start there was a collision between Coletti and Mitch Evans in the first corner , in which Evans damaged the front wing and came to the pits. On the first lap there was another collision at Turn 10. Involved were Daniel Abt , Raffaele Marciello and regalia, which meant the end of the race for all three. The safety car was sent out so that the vehicles could be safely recovered. When this was called in again, there were no changes in position.

After the pit stop window opened after the sixth lap, Palmer and Nasr made their pit stops early to switch to the harder of the two available tire compounds. The drivers who started with these tires stayed outside much longer.

Johnny cecotto jr. led the race for a long time, while Palmer and Nasr were the leading drivers who had already stopped.

When Cecotto came to his stop ten laps before the end, he was just ahead of Nasr and behind Palmer. With the fresher tires, he quickly pulled Nasr away and soon overtook Palmer and won the race. The points for the fastest lap went to Leal. Richelmi, who subsequently moved up into the top 10, drove a faster lap time than Leal, but since he had started from the pit lane, he was not entitled to points for the fastest lap.

Following the race, four drivers were penalized: Conor Daly and René Binder had not reduced their speed enough under yellow flags and were given an addition of 20 seconds to their final result. Coletti received the same penalty for slipping off the track under yellow flags. Daniël de Jong was put back ten positions for the following sprint race because he was sent out of the pit lane with an unsecured tire. Since he could only have been moved six positions, De Jong had to start the sprint race from the pit lane.

Sprint race

Felipe Nasr and Rio Haryanto started well and made up several positions. Nasr placed himself in second position behind Dillmann. Behind it, there was a contact between Haryanto and Palmer that meant the end for Haryanto. Palmer continued his race and together with Nasr put pressure on the leader Dillmann, whom Nasr passed in the third corner. In midfield there was contact between Artjom Markelow and Simon Trummer when Trummer slipped into the gravel and was then hit by Conor Daly , who could no longer brake. While the race for Trummer and Daly ended in the gravel, Markelow made it into the pit lane. But his race was over there too. Following the race, Markelow was held responsible for this accident and was punished with a five position back in the following race.

A little later, Palmer passed Dillmann and drove close behind Nasr. Dillmann then had to tear down the two men in front.

At the end of the race several drivers had problems with their tires. Evans kept falling from sixth position until he finally finished the race in the pit lane with two laps to go. Palmer in second position also had problems and had to be pulled down by Nasr on the final laps after he had a hard brake in the first corner.

Thus Nasr won for the first time in his 50th GP2 race ahead of Palmer and Dillmann. Behind them were Arthur Pic , Julian Leal , Cecotto, Richelmi and Coletti. The points for the fastest lap went to Palmer.
