Daniel Abt (2012)

Daniel Abt (born December 3, 1992 in Kempten (Allgäu) ) is a German racing car driver and influencer . He is the son of the racing team owner Hans-Jürgen Abt . He competed in the GP2 series in 2013 and 2014 . He has been competing in the FIA Formula E Championship since 2014 .

Career

Beginnings in motorsport (2001-2007)

Abt - who came into contact with motorsport early for family reasons - began his career in karting in 2001 , in which he was active until 2007. Among other things, he won the runner-up in the ADAC KF2 kart championship in 2007.

ADAC Formula Masters (2008-2009)

2008 Abbot moved into the single-seater racing and entered the ADAC Formula Masters for his father's team Abt Sportsline at. He started from pole position once and achieved a third and two second places as the best results. He finished the season in eighth place overall. He lost to his team mate Markus Pommer , who finished fifth overall with one win. In 2009, Abt contested his second season in the ADAC Formula Masters for Abt Sportsline and won the championship title with eight wins ahead of Klaus Bachler . He achieved seven pole positions and was on the podium a total of ten times. With 224 to 90 points, he clearly prevailed against his teammate René Binder internally .

German Formula 3 Cup (2010)

After Abt had already competed as a guest driver in the German Formula 3 Cup for Performance Racing in 2009 , he switched to this series in 2010 for the Van Amersfoort Racing championship team . Within the team, he prevailed against his teammates Stef Dusseldorp and Willi Steindl and had a chance of winning the championship until the last race weekend. In the end he lost to Tom Dillmann with 112 to 120 points and was runner-up with two wins and a total of ten podium finishes.

Formula 3 Euro Series (2010-2011)

Following the German Formula 3 Cup season, he started for Signature at the prestigious Macau Grand Prix . He led the race ahead of teammates Edoardo Mortara and Laurens Vanthoor , but lost control of his vehicle and retired after an accident.

In 2011 , Abt competed in the Formula 3 Euro Series for Signature. With four third places as the best results, he finished the season in seventh place overall. Within the team, he was therefore defeated by Marco Wittmann and Vanthoor - who achieved positions two and six - and was third-best driver in his team , ahead of Carlos Muñoz - who was eighth overall. He was also entitled to points in the 2011 FIA Formula 3 Trophy . There he reached fourth place.

DTM test drives (2011)

GP2 series (2011-2014)

After setting the best time several times in GP3 test drives for Lotus GP at the end of 2011 , he received a cockpit for the 2012 GP3 series from the racing team that had made the champion and runner-up last year. He won two races, was on the podium a total of seven times, had title chances until the last race of the season and needed a win in this one. In fact, he took the lead in this race - in which he started from eighth place on the grid - but he lost it shortly before the end of the race and came in second. He was defeated by Mitch Evans in the title fight with 151.5 to 149.5 points. Following the GP3 season he received at Tech 1 Racing cockpit for the last three events of the Formula Renault 3.5 . In this he remained without points. He also returned to German Formula 3 for an event. He achieved a third place.

In 2013 , Abt stayed with his racing team - which this year competed as the ART Grand Prix again - and switched to the GP2 series . Throughout the season he had problems with the set-up of his vehicle, the cause of which could not be determined by the team engineers. He scored points in only four of 22 races, with fifth place being the best result. While his teammate James Calado was third overall with 159 points, he reached 22nd overall with eleven points. In 2014 he switched to Hilmer Motorsport within the GP2 series . He finished the season in 16th place overall. He scored 27 of the 33 points of his racing team.

FIA World Endurance Championship (2015)

In 2015 , Abt made his debut for Rebellion Racing in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and at the Le Mans 24 Hours of this championship . Because the engine manufacturer switched to Advanced Engine Research (AER), the racing team only started the season for the third race. After four races, he dissolved the contract with Rebellion and withdrew from the endurance world championship.

FIA Formula E Championship (since 2014)

In addition, he was active in the newly founded FIA Formula E championship for his father's racing team in the 2014/15 season . He crossed the finish line in third place in the first race - the Beijing ePrix - but was given a time penalty for using too much energy so that he was tenth. In the fifth race in Miami he was in the lead for a long time in the second half of the race. Since he had used a little more energy, he had to save on the last few laps and dropped back to third place. With this he achieved his first podium placement. In the next race - the Long Beach ePrix - he achieved his first pole position. In the race he fell back after a penalty and was 15th. He reached eleventh place in the drivers' championship.

In the FIA Formula E Championship 2015/16 he stayed with the family racing team. He finished third in the Long Beach ePrix . In his home races in Berlin and London , he finished second. He finished the season with 68 points in seventh place overall, while his teammate finished second overall with 153 points. In addition, he competed in the ADAC GT Masters for the family racing team in 2016 and achieved 19th place in the drivers' championship. In 2016/17 , Abt is completing its third Formula E season. He finished the season in eighth place overall.

Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler confirmed Abt as a works driver in the 2017/18 FIA Formula E championship after Audi took over the team . In the second race of the Hong Kong E-Prix , he crossed the finish line first, but was disqualified. At the Mexico City E-Prix 2018 he then celebrated his first victory in the championship. At the Berlin E-Prix he scored his second win of the season and reached the first Grand Slam of the FIA ​​Formula E championship by taking pole position and the fastest race lap and being in the lead on every lap of the race. At the season finale in New York City he achieved two more podium finishes with second and third place. At the end of the season he finished fifth in the drivers' championship with 120 points.

In the 2018/19 season , Abt competed for Audi again. With two third places as the best results, he finished seventh in the championship with 95 points at the end of the season. With a third place he also finished seventh in the overall ranking of the voestalpine European Races , in which only podium places in the races on the European continent were taken into account.

Before the last New York City E-Prix 2019 , it was announced that he will drive for Audi again in the 2019/20 season .

ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge (2020)

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the Formula E championship was also interrupted in March 2020 and a virtual eSports competition was started to bridge the gap . At the fifth race in Berlin-Tempelhof , Abt was not behind the wheel himself, but instead had Austrian eSports professional Lorenz Hörzing drive. The deception was noticed, among other things, because he performed significantly better than in the previous competitions. In the first four races his best result was 13th, but in the last race he was third. He was disqualified, and the organizer deprived of all points scored so far. In addition, Abt was advised to donate 10,000  euros to a charity. Shortly afterwards, Abt was suspended by Audi Sport with immediate effect.

Others

From 2008 to 2010, Abt was a candidate for the Deutsche Post Speed ​​Academy and became the overall winner of the Academy in 2009 and 2010, making him “Germany's Motorsport Talent of the Year” . Since 2010 he has also been a member of the Volkswagen funding program . In 2017 he was named “Sportsman of the Year” by his hometown.

Since April 2014, Abt has been actively running the Daniel Abt YouTube channel , on which he shows his life as a racing driver. In July 2020, it had 380,000 subscribers with more than 70 million views. Since April 2020 he has been running the podcast Reden am Limit with Bene Mayr and Mitja Lafere.

Personal

In addition to Abt, other members of his family are involved in motorsport. His father Hans-Jürgen Abt is the owner and team boss of the Abt Sportsline racing team , which is active in the DTM , among other things . His uncle Christian Abt is also a racing driver and was active in the DTM for several years. Daniel Abt made his diploma at the technical school in Kempten.

Abt is the managing director of Abt Lifestyle GmbH.
