The New York City ePrix 2017 (officially: 2017 FIA Formula E Qualcomm New York City ePrix ) took place on July 15 and 16 on the New York City Formula E circuit in New York City and was the ninth and tenth races of the FIA Formula E Championship 2016/17 . It was the first New York City ePrix and the first race of the FIA Formula E Championship in North America since the Long Beach ePrix 2016 .
It was also the first ePrix that was completely emission-free , as the electricity required was produced entirely by the Stipa Nayaa wind farm in Mexico , northeast of Mexico City .
report
background
After the Berlin ePrix , Sébastien Buemi led the drivers' standings with 32 points ahead of Lucas di Grassi and with 69 points ahead of Felix Rosenqvist . In the team standings, Renault e.dams had 58 points ahead of ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport and 80 points ahead of Mahindra Racing .
At DS Virgin , Alex Lynn replaced José María López in this race , who was unable to contest the ePrix because of the FIA World Endurance Championship race at the Nürburgring . Lynn made her debut in the FIA Formula E Championship, and Richard Branson took his position as reserve driver for this ePrix . However, this was perceived in the media as a PR gag as Branson did not have the racing license required to start . Buemi was also unable to deny the ePrix because of this conflict of dates. He was replaced in the race by Pierre Gasly , who also made his debut in the FIA Formula E Championship.
Daniel Abt , di Grassi and Jean-Éric Vergne received a so-called FanBoost in the first race , they were allowed to increase the output of their second vehicle to up to 200 kW and thus use up to 100 kilojoules of additional energy. di Grassi received the ninth FanBoost in the ninth race of the season and the sixteenth in the FIA Formula E Championship. For Abt it was the seventh FanBoost this season and for Vergne the first since the Paris ePrix 2016 .
In the second race, Abt and di Grassi received another FanBoost , the third went to Nick Heidfeld . Di Grassi thus received the tenth FanBoost in the tenth race of the season and the seventeenth in the FIA Formula E championship. For Abt it was the eighth FanBoost this season, for Heidfeld it was the first. Most recently, Heidfeld received a FanBoost at the first London ePrix race in 2016 .
Race day one
training
In the first free practice, Lynn drove the fastest lap with a lap time of 1: 05.977 minutes ahead of Sam Bird and Rosenqvist.
In the second free practice, Rosenqvist was fastest in 1: 02.423 minutes ahead of Heidfeld and Nicolas Prost .
Qualifying
Qualifying started at 12:00 p.m. and took place in four groups of five drivers each, each group had six minutes in which the drivers had a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 170 kW and then a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 200 kW were allowed to drive. Bird was fastest with a lap time of 1: 02.806 minutes.
The five fastest drivers then drove in the first five positions in the individual time trial called Superpole . Lynn secured pole position with a lap time of 1: 03.296 minutes and thus three points. The other positions were occupied by Abt, Vergne, Bird and Jérôme D'Ambrosio .
run
The race went over 43 laps.
The pole position was on the outside of the track, so the drivers with the straight grid positions made the first corner on the inside. Abt overtook Lynn right at the start, Bird also passed Vergne and Heidfeld past D'Ambrosio. There were several contacts in midfield, including between Stéphane Sarrazin and Prost. As a result, Prost fell back to the end of the field. Mitch Evans collided with Robin Frijns and the front suspension on his Jaguar broke. He drove slowly to the pits and switched to his second vehicle.
Abbot led in front of Lynn, Bird, Vergne, Heidfeld, D'Ambrosio, Oliver Turvey , Sarrazin, Nelson Piquet jr. and di Grassi.
D'Ambrosio was unable to keep up with the other drivers and had to let Turvey and Sarrazin pass on the third lap and Piquet one lap later. On lap five, Piquet made a mistake in a hairpin bend and had to brake in order not to hit the track barrier. D'Ambrosio drove into Piquet, damaging his vehicle and di Grassi overtaking him. Shortly afterwards, D'Ambrosio pitted to repair his damaged car. Bird overtook Lynn on the ninth lap, and Heidfeld also passed Vergne.
In the eleventh round, Bird attacked Abbot who defended himself. There was a slight contact between the vehicles, but both drove on without damage to their car. At this point Evans drove the fastest lap of the race in his second car. Piquet slowed down on the twelfth lap and had to let di Grassi, Rosenqvist, Loïc Duval , Adam Carroll and António Félix da Costa pass one after the other . His team-mate Turvey also slowed down, so that one after the other Sarrazin, di Grassi and Rosenqvist passed.
After Bird launched several attacks on Abt, he overtook him on lap 16. Lynn had to save energy at this point, so Heidfeld and Vergne went by. On lap 18, Félix da Costa collided with Carroll while attempting to overtake, and both vehicles lost parts that were subsequently on the track. Félix da Costa pitted at the end of the lap. Shortly afterwards, Vergne overtook Heidfeld and was now in third place. Sarrazin and di Grassi also overtook Lynn, who had the lowest energy level of all pilots. Vergne passed Abbot on the same lap.
On the 20th lap, Lynn, the first pilot, drove to the regular vehicle change, the minimum time was 47 seconds. Bird, Vergne, Sarrazin, Rosenqvist, Duval, Turvey, Carroll, Tom Dillmann , Prost and Piquet followed a lap later . On the 22nd lap, the last drivers changed their vehicles with Abt, Heidfeld, di Grassi, Gasly and Frijns. Heidfeld's stop lasted two seconds longer than the minimum time, so that he lost positions.
After the vehicle changes, Bird was leading in front of Vergne, Abt, Sarrazin, Lynn, Rosenqvist, di Grassi, Heidfeld, Duval and Turvey. Maro Engel drove the fastest lap of the race, shortly afterwards Lynn stopped on the track with a defective drive shaft.
On lap 28, di Grassi used his FanBoost to close the gap to Rosenqvist and put him under pressure. However, Rosenqvist managed to defend his position. On the 32nd lap, Dillmann and Gasly overtook Carroll one after the other. One lap later, di Grassi again attacked Rosenqvist, who braked while approaching turn two , turned and then hit the road barrier backwards. He hit so hard that the rear wing on his Mahindra was damaged. He lost two positions to di Grassi and Heidfeld and then resumed the journey. Since part of his rear wing was touching the right rear tire, the race management showed him the fried egg flag . He pitted for repairs and fell one lap back to the bottom of the field.
On lap 37, Heidfeld parked his vehicle on the edge of the track, the right rear wheel had come off. The race management sent the safety car out onto the track to rescue the car . The race was reopened on lap 41.
On the last lap, Abt rolled out with an error in the battery management system and parked his vehicle at the edge of the track. Shortly before the finish line, Dillmann dropped from ninth to thirteenth place.
Bird won over Vergne and Sarrazin. The remaining points were occupied by di Grassi, Duval, Turvey, Gasly, Prost, Frijns and Carroll. The point for the fastest race lap went to Engel.
Race day two
training
In contrast to the previous day, there was only one free practice session on the second day of the race.
Bird was fastest ahead of Vergne and Engel with a lap time of 1: 02.209 minutes. After an accident by Frijns, the training session was stopped around two minutes before the end.
Qualifying
Qualifying began at 9:00 a.m. and took place in four groups of five drivers each, each group had six minutes in which the drivers had a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 170 kW and then a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 200 kW were allowed to drive. Gasly was fastest with a lap time of 1: 02.080 minutes.
The five fastest drivers then drove in the first five positions in the individual time trial called Superpole . Bird secured pole position with a lap time of 1: 02.285 minutes and thus three points. The other positions were occupied by Rosenqvist, Vergne, Gasly and Heidfeld.
Frijns was moved ten positions back because of a gear change after the accident in free practice and Piquet because of an engine change. Since this was not possible from starting positions 11 or 16, they had to start from the last two starting positions. Frijns also received a five-second penalty and Piquet a ten-second penalty, which was added to the minimum time when changing vehicles.
run
The race lasted 49 laps.
Again the pilots started better from the straight starting positions, so that Rosenqvist took the lead. Engel drove into Vergne in the first bend, then Abbot drove into Engel. Dillmann took the opportunity and drove past Abt on the inside of the track. At the end of the first lap, Abb's vehicle stopped, as it did the day before, due to a problem with the battery management system. Abt succeeded in getting the vehicle moving again and driving slowly to the pits, where he later resumed the race in the second vehicle.
Rosenqvist led before Bird, Vergne, Heidfeld, Gasly, Engel, Turvey, Dillmann, di Grassi and Evans. The race management showed Vergne the fried egg flag because part of the rear wheel cover had come loose as a result of the collision on the first lap. Vergne pitted on the second lap and had the damage repaired, and he fell back to the end of the field.
Part of the rear wheel cover on Engels vehicle had also come loose. Engel drove close to the wall several times, hoping to strip off the damaged part. On the fifth lap he collided with the barrier and damaged his front suspension. He drove into the pits and switched to his second vehicle, which he had converted in order to be able to drive the fastest lap. At the top, the first four drivers were already able to pull away, while Turvey in fifth place clearly held the drivers behind.
Evans parked his vehicle at the edge of the track with a technical defect. In order to be able to recover the vehicle, the race management announced a full course yellow on the ninth lap . Gasly didn't know the exact rules of the full course yellow , so he slowed down too early and lost five seconds on the leading three pilots. The race was reopened one lap later. Bird overtook Rosenqvist and took the lead again. Heidfeld tried to take advantage of the situation and also attacked Rosenqvist, but couldn't get past.
On lap 13, di Grassi overtook Dillmann and was now in sixth place. Two laps later he also overtook Turvey, but the gap to Gasly, who was now ahead of him, was already around eight seconds. Engel drove the fastest lap of the race to date. Prost overtook Dillmann on lap 16, one lap later they both passed Turvey.
On lap 20, Lynn parked his vehicle on the track. To rescue the car, a full course yellow was called again on lap 23 . Rosenqvist, Heidfeld, Gasly, di Grassi, Prost, Dillmann, D'Ambrosio, Félix da Costa, Turvey, Duval, Carroll and Piquet used this to change vehicles, one lap later Bird, Sarrazin and Vergne also pitted. The race was reopened when Bird had just pulled out of the pit lane. Since both Techeetah drivers were still changing their vehicles, they dropped from eighth and eleven to 15th and 16th place.
Bird led ahead of Rosenqvist, Heidfeld, Gasly, Frijns, who was the only driver who had not changed vehicles, di Grassi, Prost, Dillmann, Félix da Costa and D'Ambrosio. Four laps later, Frijns changed his car, he fell one lap back and was now in 16th place. D'Ambrosio attacked Félix da Costa on the same lap, but spun and fell back behind him and Duval. At this point, Abt drove the fastest lap of the race.
On lap 32 Duval attacked Félix da Costa, who however defended himself. During the next attack on lap 33, the vehicles touched slightly and Félix da Costa turned so that Duval and D'Ambrosio passed. Piquet received a drive-through penalty for failing to serve the ten-second time penalty when changing vehicle.
Rosenqvist let Heidfeld pass on lap 36 because he feared problems with the recuperation. Little happened in the following laps as most pilots limited themselves to saving energy. The already lapped Frijns had rounded back and reduced the gap to the rest of the field.
D'Ambrosio overtook Duval on lap 45, but both drivers lost time and Félix da Costa caught up. This attacked Duval a lap later, there was a collision and Duval spun. He was able to go on, but fell behind Sarrazin and Vergne. Félix da Costa received a drive-through penalty for causing this collision.
On lap 47, Heidfeld let Rosenqvist pass again, but both drivers had to save energy. Gasly, who was about five seconds behind the two Mahindra pilots, clearly caught up. Just before the finish, Vergne overtook D'Ambrosio, who had too little energy and lost more than 15 seconds on the last lap. Shortly before the goal, he also had to let Frijns pass. But even Carroll was only able to finish the last lap very slowly, Duval and Sarrazin did not even cross the finish line due to lack of energy. In the last corner Gasly was within striking distance of Heidfeld and tried to overtake him on the outside. He drove against the wall at the edge of the track, skidded across the track and hit the boundary again there, but still rolled over the finish line.
Bird also won the second race ahead of Rosenqvist and Heidfeld. The remaining points were placed by Gasly, di Grassi, Prost, Dillmann, Vergne, Frijns and D'Ambrosio. The point for the fastest race lap went to Abt.
In the drivers' championship, di Grassi reduced the gap to Buemi to ten points, and only Rosenqvist and the fourth-placed Bird had arithmetical championship chances. In the team standings, Renault.edams extended its lead over ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport and Mahindra Racing.
