report
background
After the Beijing ePrix , Sébastien Buemi led the drivers' standings with twelve points ahead of Lucas di Grassi and fifteen points ahead of Nick Heidfeld . In the team standings, Renault e.dams was eight points ahead of Dragon Racing and twelve points ahead of ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport .
Two days before the race it was announced that Salvador Durán is leaving the Trulli Formula E Team , which could not compete in the first round of the season. The team was surprised by the decision and accused Durán of breach of contract. Since the team could not find another driver at such short notice, team boss Jarno Trulli was to compete as a driver himself, even though he had already ended his racing career at the end of the preseason.
With Sam Bird , a former winner entered the race.
As in the previous year, the schedule was moved forward by two hours to avoid heavy rainfall that was expected in the afternoon. The two free training sessions were combined into one longer session.
Heidfeld, Nelson Piquet Jr. and Oliver Turvey received a so-called FanBoost , they were allowed to increase the output of their second vehicle up to 200 kW and thus use up to 100 kilojoules of additional energy.
Since the vehicles of the Trulli team did not pass the technical inspection, the team had to skip the race again. The team management justified this with the fact that there was not enough time to assemble the vehicles.
training
Loïc Duval set the best time with a lap time of 1: 20.188 minutes ahead of Buemi and Daniel Abt . The training had to be interrupted three times, first an advertising banner had detached from the safety fence, then a loose fastening bolt of the curbs protruded far upwards. The third interruption occurred because Jacques Villeneuve had to park his car on the track with problems with the battery and at the same time Nelson Piquet jr. crashed into the lane.
Qualifying
Qualifying started at 10:00 a.m. and took place in four groups. As only 18 vehicles took part, the field was drawn into two groups with five and two groups with four drivers. Each driver had 6 minutes to set a fast lap. Buemi was fastest with a lap time of 1: 19.821 minutes.
The five fastest drivers then drove in the first five positions in the individual time trial called Superpole . Buemi secured pole position with a lap time of 1: 20.196 minutes and thus three points. The other positions were occupied by Stéphane Sarrazin , Duval, António Félix da Costa and Nicolas Prost .
run
The race lasted 33 laps. Second-placed Sarrazin caused an aborted start because his engine had died and he had to start the race from the pit lane.
At the start, the positions at the top remained unchanged, Buemi was ahead of Duval, Félix da Costa, Prost and di Grassi. Jean-Éric Vergne collided with Heidfeld and Jacques Villeneuve in the first corner , for Vergne the race ended with a broken suspension, Heidfeld spun and fell back to the end of the field. On the approach to turn four , Robin Frijns passed Jérôme D'Ambrosio and was now in sixth place.
On lap five, Oliver Turvey hit the road barrier after a problem with the accelerator pedal, and the safety car was sent out to rescue the vehicle . The race was reopened at the end of the seventh lap.
Prost passed Félix da Costa on the ninth lap and then caught up with Duval. Abbot passed D'Ambrosio and was now in seventh place. Simona de Silvestro passed Piquet. Sarrazin, who had caught up with the end of the field due to the safety car phase, overtook Piquet and de Silvestro shortly afterwards. Buemi was leading in front of Duval and Prost, followed by Félix da Costa, di Grassi, Frijns, Abt, D'Ambrosio, Bird and Villeneuve. Heidfeld had already improved to eleventh place after his spin in the first corner.
On lap 15 Buemi first parked his vehicle on the track, his team-mate Prost pitted to change vehicles on this lap due to a temperature problem, the minimum time for changing vehicles was 58 seconds. Buemi managed to drive on shortly afterwards and also to come to the pits to change vehicles. One lap later, Daniel Abt and Nathanaël Berthon stopped . Abt had a technical problem starting his second vehicle, he lost more than 22 seconds on the minimum time.
Duval, Félix da Costa, di Grassi, Villeneuve and de Silvestro stopped at the end of lap 17. Villeneuve also lost more than 20 seconds and fell back to last place. One lap later, all the other drivers changed their vehicle, except for Piquet, who drove two more laps with the first car. Heidfeld fell four seconds below the minimum time for the pit stop.
After the pit stops, Prost was in the lead from Félix da Costa, di Grassi, Duval, D'Ambrosio, Frijns, Heidfeld, Bird, Buemi and Abt. Di Grassi passed Félix da Costa shortly afterwards. Heidfeld briefly lost control of his car and touched the barrier, Bird took advantage of this and walked past. The day after the race it turned out that Heidfeld had torn a ligament in his left hand while counter-steering , he had to undergo an operation and skip the following ePrix in Punta del Este . Shortly afterwards, Heidfeld, who had no pit radio available, received a drive-through penalty for falling short of the minimum pit stop time.
After changing vehicles early on, Prost had to save energy and the following pilots were able to catch up. On lap 24 di Grassi passed and took the lead. One lap later, Prost was also overtaken by Félix da Costa, who a few corners later with an overheated battery initially parked his car on the track, but continued shortly afterwards. He fell back to seventh place. Duval overtook Prost and was now in second place. The problem with Félix da Costa repeated itself shortly afterwards, he fell further back and was now in eleventh place behind Heidfeld, who had taken his drive-through penalty on the previous lap.
D'Ambrosio also overtook Prost on lap 28, who also had to let Frijns and Bird pass on the same lap. Meanwhile, Sarrazin overtook Abbot and was now in eighth place.
In the last three laps, events rolled over. Duval suffered a break in the suspension and initially drove on at a slow speed. Prost braked himself and drove into the run-off zone, he fell back several places. Frijns overtook the slow Duval, shortly afterwards lost control of his vehicle and hit the lane. He damaged the rear right wheel suspension, but continued the race. Duval parked his car on the side of the road shortly afterwards. Buemi also parked his vehicle briefly on the route. Senna passed his team-mate Heidfeld and was eighth, while Félix da Costa also overtook Heidfeld. After a broken suspension on the last lap, D'Ambrosio hit the track barrier and retired, losing a second place that was believed to be safe. In the last lap, Abt fell behind Senna and Félix da Costa.
Di Grassi won the race ahead of Bird and Frijns. The top 10 were completed by Sarrazin, Senna, Félix da Costa, Abt, Piquet, Heidfeld and Prost. The two points for the fastest race lap went to Buemi.
Di Grassi took the lead in the overall standings ahead of Buemi and Bird. In the team classification, ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport was in first place, ahead of Renault e.dams and Mahindra Racing .
