training
In the first free practice session, Edoardo Mortara set the fastest time in 1: 09.273 minutes ahead of Pascal Wehrlein and D'Ambrosio. The training was canceled by Abt about ten minutes before the end after an accident. Abt was flown to a hospital by rescue helicopter and missed the second free practice and qualifying.
Sam Bird was fastest in the second free practice with a lap time of 1: 07.672 minutes ahead of António Félix da Costa and Mitch Evans .
Qualifying
Qualifying began on Saturday at 11:45 a.m. and took place in four groups of six drivers each, each group had six minutes in which the drivers had a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 200 kW and then a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 250 kW were allowed to drive. Abt did not take part in free practice after his accident. Oliver Turvey stopped on his lap with a technical problem. He missed the 110 percent hurdle and thus did not qualify for the E-Prix. Evans was fastest with a lap time of 1: 08.174 minutes and received one point.
The six fastest drivers then drove in the first six positions in the individual time trial called Superpole . André Lotterer secured pole position with a lap time of 1: 07.922 minutes and thus three points. The other positions were occupied by Evans, Wehrlein, Nyck de Vries , Buemi and Bird.
D'Ambrosio and Wehrlein were each moved 40 starting positions back, as both drivers had to change the two transmissions available for the season. Since D'Ambrosio could only be moved back ten positions from 14th on the grid, he was also given a 10-second stop-and-go penalty. Wehrlein could only be moved by 21 positions, so he received a drive-through penalty. Abt and Turvey were allowed to take part in the race because they had both done fast enough laps in free practice to qualify.
