Career

Rowland began his motorsport career in karting in 2000 . Until 2005 he competed in British kart series. He won the national Super 1 Cadet Championship in 2003 and 2004 and was runner-up in the British ICA Junior Kart Championship in 2005. In 2006 he also competed in European kart series and achieved second place in the Monegasque ICA Junior Kart Cup. In the following years Rowland achieved further success in international karting. Among other things, he was CIK-FIA-KF2 World Cup winner in 2007 and CIK-FIA Super KF World Cup winner in 2010 . From 2007 to 2010 Rowland was sponsored and supported by the Formula 1 racing team McLaren . The 2010 season was overshadowed by the death of his father, who had promoted him until then. The British racing driver Martin Hines then took over the promotion of Rowland and became a kind of "father figure" for him.

At the end of 2010 Rowland switched to formula racing and competed for CRS Racing in the British Formula Renault Winter Cup. He won a race and finished seventh in the drivers' standings. In 2011 Rowland started for Fortec Motorsport in the British Formula Renault. While his teammate Alex Lynn won the championship with twelve wins, Rowland decided four races for themselves. At the end of the season Rowland was tied with Tio Ellinas . Since Rowland had two more wins to show, he was runner-up. Rowland suffered a stroke of fate this season as well, as his sponsor Martin Hines passed away. After the season, Rowland took part again in the winter series of the British Formula Renault and won it. He won four of six races and was second twice. In December Rowland won the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award and received £ 100,000 in prize money as well as  a Formula 1 test in the McLaren.

In 2012 Rowland competed for Fortec Motorsport in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup . With a win at the Circuit de Catalunya and two further podium finishes, Rowland finished third in the overall standings. In 2013, Rowland moved to Manor MP Motorsport within the series . He won in Spa-Francorchamps , Wolokolamsk and Spielberg . He stood on the podium a total of eight times. In the championship Rowland defeated Pierre Gasly with 179 to 195 points. In addition, Rowland started for his racing team in eight of 16 races in the Northern European Formula Renault . He has stood on the podium in every race he competed and has four wins in the process. Although he had only completed half of the races, he finished the season in fourth place in the drivers' championship.

He won a race each in Alcañiz, Spa-Francorchamps, Mogyoród , Spielberg, Silverstone , Nürburg , Le Mans and Jerez. At the penultimate race weekend he won the championship. With 307 to 234 he prevailed against Matthieu Vaxivière . With eight wins Rowland also set a new record for the most wins in a season. In addition, Rowland competed in 2015 for MP Motorsport and Status Grand Prix for two events each in the GP2 series . He also represented the injured Nick Heidfeld at Mahindra Racing at the Punta del Este ePrix 2015 in the FIA Formula E championship 2015/16 .

In 2016 Rowland joined MP Motorsport in the GP2 series as a regular. In addition, he was accepted into the Renault funding program. Although he had not won a race, he led the drivers' standings for a short time after the tenth race. He reached four podium finishes and was ninth overall. With 107 to 6 points, he clearly prevailed against his teammate Daniël de Jong . In 2017 Rowland moved to DAMS and stayed in the series, which had been renamed the FIA Formula 2 Championship that winter .

For the formula e 2018/19 Rowland received a cockpit at Nissan e.dams . With two second places as the best results and three pole positions, he finished tenth in the drivers' championship with 71 points at the end of the season. With a second place he also took sixth place in the overall ranking of the voestalpine European Races , in which only podium places in the races on the European continent were considered.
