The 2018/19 ABB FIA Formula E Championship was the fifth season of the FIA Formula E Championship . It began on December 15, 2018 in Diriyya and ended on July 14, 2019 in New York City . The season consisted of thirteen races.

Changes in 2018/19

run

The Bern E-Prix , the Diriyya E-Prix and the Sanya E-Prix were new to the calendar . The Monaco E-Prix returned to the racing calendar after a year. The races in Punta del Este and Zurich were canceled .

The Santiago E-Prix was held on a new racetrack.

Technical regulations

The Spark SRT_05e chassis is used for the first time

In the 2018/19 season, the Spark SRT_05e was used for the first time , the previous seasons were all contested with the Spark-Renault SRT_01E . A visually very striking innovation was the Halo system , which was used for the first time in the FIA Formula E championship.

The maximum power of the vehicles increased from 200 kW to 250 kW, the power in the race from 180 kW to 200 kW. The racing cars also had a brake-by-wire system that electronically distributed the braking power on the rear axle to the electric motor and the brake discs. In this context, the maximum energy recovery when braking with the electric motor, the so-called recuperation , increased from 150 kW to 250 kW.

The battery capacity increased from 33 to 54 kWh, the weight of the batteries increased from 230 kg to 280 kg. The minimum weight of the bolides rose from 880 kg to 900 kg.

Sporting regulations

The draw for the qualifying groups was abolished, instead the drivers who were ahead in the overall standings always started in the first group. At the start of the season, the order of the drivers' ranking from the previous season was used.

Since the starting field was expanded to a maximum of 12 teams, the number of drivers per group changed to six, and the fastest six drivers started in the Superpole .

The races were no longer held over a fixed number of laps, but over 45 minutes plus one lap.

Due to the larger capacity of the batteries, there was no need to change vehicles halfway through the race.

The additional point for the fastest race lap should be dropped according to the first published plans, instead the driver among the top five who had the most remaining energy in the accumulator at the finish should receive bonus points. However, this change was not implemented, there was still a bonus point for the driver in the top ten who drove the fastest race lap.

During the race, the drivers were able to increase the power to 225 kW by driving through a specially marked activation zone on the track. This energy mode was called attack mode. The activation was signaled to the spectators via a brightly colored LED strip on the vehicle's halo system. How often and for how long a driver was allowed to use attack mode should vary from route to route. In addition, the performance of the vehicle increased to a minimum of 240 kW and a maximum of 250 kW when the fan boost was activated . The fan boost voting also ended with the start of the race. In addition, five pilots instead of the previous three received the fan boost , which could be used from the 22nd minute of the race. The additional amount of energy that a driver received remained the same at 100 kJ.

If the race was canceled, full points were only awarded if the 34th minute of the race had already been completed at the time of the cancellation.

Teams

BMW took over the manufacturing license from Andretti , Andretti continued to be responsible for the use of the vehicles. The team called BMW i Andretti Motorsport no longer started with a US license, but with a British license, as the company behind the team was based in the United Kingdom. Nismo replaced Renault in the DAMS Formula E team . DAMS continued to oversee the operations on the racetrack, the team started under the name Nissan e.dams.

After three seasons together, Virgin and DS Automobiles split . DS took over the manufacturing license from Virgin, and Techeetah became the new DS factory team . The Chinese team started in the preseason as a customer team for Renault. Virgin started with Audi customer engines in the 2018/19 season.

HWA Racelab entered the FIA Formula E Championship as the eleventh team; the team purchased customer engines from Venturi .

driver

Felipe Massa made his debut for Venturi in the FIA Formula E Championship. Nicolas Prost left the team after four seasons at Renault e.dams. Alexander Albon , who was to make his debut in the FIA Formula E championship, was signed as his successor . Albon was registered as a regular driver on the official registration list for the official test drives before the season and also traveled to Valencia. However, he left the test drives prematurely without getting into the car as he began negotiations with Scuderia Toro Rosso with the aim of contesting the 2019 Formula 1 World Championship for the team. Less than three weeks before the start of the season, Nissan finally announced the termination of the contract with Albon. His place was taken over by Oliver Rowland , who had previously contested a race in the racing series with the Punta del Este ePrix 2015 .

Even Alexander Sims made his debut in the formula e at BMW. Robin Frijns returned to the FIA Formula E Championship after a season in the DTM and was given a cockpit at Virgin Racing .

Gary Paffett was presented as the first driver of the HWA Racelab team, and he also made his debut in the FIA Formula E Championship. Paffett has been driving for Mercedes-Benz in the DTM since 2003 . His teammate will be Stoffel Vandoorne , who previously drove for McLaren in the Formula 1 World Championship. Tom Dillmann , test and reserve driver at Venturi in the previous season, switched to NIO as a regular driver , where he succeeded Luca Filippi .

Both drivers were exchanged at Mahindra Racing : Felix Rosenqvist switched to the IndyCar Series , Nick Heidfeld became “Special Advisor” at Mahindra and remained the team's test and reserve driver. Instead, Jérôme D'Ambrosio , who drove for Dragon Racing in the preseason , and the former Formula 1 and DTM driver Pascal Wehrlein competed for Mahindra. However, Wehrlein was still represented by Rosenqvist at the season opener and took over the cockpit for the second race of the season. D'Ambrosio's successor at Dragon Racing was Maximilian Günther , who also made his debut in the FIA Formula E Championship.

After the Santiago E-Prix Günther was replaced by Felipe Nasr at Dragon Racing . Günther stayed with the team as test, simulator and substitute driver and replaced Nasr at the Rome E-Prix , as Nasr was unable to participate due to his involvement in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship . Günther replaced Nasr again in the following races.

After the Sanya E-Prix , Nelson Piquet jr. Replaced at Jaguar Racing by Alex Lynn , who drove for Virgin Racing the previous season.

Teams and drivers

All teams and drivers used the standard Spark SRT_05e chassis and Michelin tires .

Racing calendar

In 2018/19 thirteen races are to be held in twelve cities. On June 7, 2018, the FIA published the racing calendar, but two venues were missing. In one of the two races it was only announced that it would be held in China. On July 3, 2018, the championship organizers announced that the Chinese race, previously named without a venue, will take place in Sanya . On September 4, 2018, the race in Zurich was canceled .

On October 9, 2018, the organizers announced that the third race, which had previously been without a venue, would again be held in Santiago .

On October 12, 2018 it was announced that the race in Zurich had been replaced by a race in Bern. The date for the race in Switzerland has been postponed two weeks to June 22, 2019. The FIA World Motor Sports Council confirmed the final racing calendar on the same day.

In January 2019 it became known that the Berlin E-Prix was being held as a two-day event. The background to the decision was the fact that ARD was planning to broadcast the race live again, but wanted to avoid another collision with the DFB Cup final . The start of the race was therefore set for 1 p.m. It was the first E-Prix in which a racing day, consisting of free practice sessions, qualifying and racing, was split over two days.
