Jean-Éric Vergne (born April 25, 1990 in Pontoise ) is a French racing driver . In 2010 he won the British Formula 3 . In 2010 and 2011 he competed in Formula Renault 3.5 , where he finished second in the drivers' championship in 2011. From 2012 to 2014 he competed in Formula 1 for Scuderia Toro Rosso . He has been competing in the FIA Formula E championship since 2014 , where he won the drivers' championship in 2017/18 and 2018/19 .

Career

Beginnings in motorsport (2001-2011)

Vergne began his motorsport career in karting in 2001 , where he was active until 2006. Among other things, he was seventh in the 2006 Formula A karting world championship and runner-up in the French championship. 2007 changed Vergne in Formula racing and entered in the French Formula Renault on campus. With six wins and another four podium finishes, he secured the championship title in his first season. In 2008 Vergne switched to SG Formula and competed for his team in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and in the Western European Formula Renault. Although he didn't win a race, he was the best newcomer in both series. In the Western European Formula Renault, he finished fourth and won the French Formula Renault title, which was awarded to the best French in this championship. He finished sixth in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup. In 2009, Vergne stayed in both championships and was runner-up behind Albert Costa with a total of seven wins in both series .

In 2010 Vergne switched to the British Formula 3 Championship , where he competed for Carlin . He made a strong debut with two wins on the first race weekend. In Spa-Francorchamps , Vergne managed to win all three races. With a total of 13 victories, after 24 of 30 races, he became the first Frenchman to win the British Formula 3 Championship. He is the third Red Bull Junior and Carlin driver in a row to win this title. In addition, it was planned that he for SG Formula in the 2010 season of Formula Renault 3.5 was supposed to start. However, SG Formula withdrew from Formula Renault 3.5 a week before the start of the season. Instead, he started the GP3 series for Tech 1 Racing on two race weekends of the 2010 season and finished 17th overall. From the seventh race weekend of the 2010 season, there was finally a commitment in the Formula Renault 3.5. After Brendon Hartley had to vacate his cockpit at Tech 1 Racing, Vergne was signed as a replacement for the remaining six races. Already at the second race weekend at Silverstone he achieved his first victory. He benefited from the disqualification of Esteban Guerrieri , who finished before him. He was on the podium in a total of four races and finished the season ahead of his predecessor Hartley in eighth place overall. In November, Vergne, who has been supported by Red Bull and the FFSA since late 2007 , completed his first Formula 1 test for Scuderia Toro Rosso .

In 2011 , Vergne competed for Carlin in the Formula Renault 3.5 as a team-mate of Robert Wickens . In Spa-Francorchamps and Le Castellet he decided one race each and at the Hungaroring both races for himself. Vergne achieved a total of nine podium finishes. At the end of the season he lost to Wickens with 232 to 241 points and was runner-up. On Alexander Rossi , the third place, he had a lead of 76 points. In addition, Vergne took part in some Friday Formula 1 training sessions for Toro Rosso. In the Young Driver Days of Formula 1 he came for Red Bull Racing used and generated at each of the three days the fastest time.

Formula 1 (2012-2014)

In 2012 , Vergne competed in Formula 1 for Toro Rosso together with Daniel Ricciardo . In his debut race in Australia he reached eleventh place. One race later, at the Malaysian Grand Prix , when the weather conditions got wetter and wetter, Vergne benefited from the fact that the race was interrupted and he was able to switch from intermediate to rain tires without a pit stop. He eventually crossed the finish line in eighth place and scored his first points. In the further course of the season, further points were placed with three eighth places. Vergne prevailed against Ricciardo within the team with 16 to 10 points and was 17th in the drivers' world championship at the end of the season.

In 2013 , Vergne and Ricciardo stayed with Toro Rosso. In the seventh race, the Canadian Grand Prix , Vergne achieved his best Formula 1 position to date with sixth place, which was also his last point placement of the season. Vergne was 15th in the drivers' standings and lost the team-internal duel against Ricciardo with 13 to 20 points.

In 2014 , Vergne got a new teammate at Toro Rosso in Daniil Kwjat , after Ricciardo had switched to sister team Red Bull Racing. He chose # 25 as his permanent Formula 1 starting number. The number was previously used by the French Ligier team and various French drivers from 1979 to 1995 . A sixth place in Singapore was his best result and also Toro Rosso's best result in the 2014 World Championship. Vergne moved up to 13th place in the drivers' standings. Although he prevailed against Kwjat internally with 22 to 8 points, Kwjat was ordered to the sister team Red Bull Racing at the end of the season, while Vergne lost his Formula 1 cockpit at Toro Rosso after three years.

FIA Formula E Championship (since 2014/15)

In the 2014/15 season , Vergne took part in the FIA Formula E Championship for Andretti Autosport from the third race . At the Punta del Este ePrix , he immediately achieved pole position. In the final phase of the race, he was eliminated in second place with a technical defect. In Miami he also took pole position and was out in the final stages. At the Long Beach ePrix he finally achieved his first podium finish with a second place. At the London ePrix , he was again on the podium in third place. He finished the season as the best driver, who had not competed in every race, in seventh place overall. In 2015 , Vergne took on the role of test driver in Formula 1 at Ferrari .

For the FIA Formula E Championship 2015/16 , Vergne switched to the DS Virgin Racing Formula E Team . At his home race in Paris , he achieved a podium finish with second place. He was also third on the podium at the London ePrix . He finished the season with 56 points in ninth place overall and was internally subject to Sam Bird , who was fourth with 88 points. In addition, Vergne stayed with Ferrari as a test driver for the 2016 Formula 1 World Championship .

Vergne is completing his third season in Formula E in 2016/17 for the Techeetah Formula E Team , a Chinese racing team that emerged from Team Aguri . He finished second in Buenos Aires and Mexico City and in the first races in New York City and Montreal . At the last race of the season, the second round in Montreal, he achieved his first Formula E victory. Vergne improved to fifth place in the championship with 117 points. In addition, Vergne received a cockpit at Manor for the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) 2017 . He contested eight out of nine races of the season and was 15th in the drivers' championship with a fifth place as the best result.

In the formula e 2017/18 Vergne stayed with Techeetah. He finished each of the twelve races in the top ten, achieved four pole positions and won the races in Santiago , Punta del Este , Paris and the second race in New York City . He won the driver's title for the first time at the end of the season with 198 points.

Vergne competed again for Techeetah in the 2018/19 season . However, the team started as a DS Automobiles works team. He defended his championship title with three wins and two more podium results. With 136 points, he became the first driver in the racing series to win the drivers' championship twice. With two victories and a third place he also won the overall ranking of the voestalpine European Races , in which only podium places in the races on the European continent were taken into account.
