The Grand Prix of India in 2013 (officially 2013 Formula 1 Airtel Indian Grand Prix ) took place on 27 October at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida place and was the 16th race of the Formula 1 World Championship in 2013 .
Reports
background
After the Japanese Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' championship with 90 points ahead of Fernando Alonso and 120 points ahead of Kimi Räikkönen . At this Grand Prix, Vettel had the opportunity to win the title early on his own if he was at least fifth. Red Bull-Renault led the constructors' championship with 148 points ahead of Ferrari and 158 points ahead of Mercedes .
At the Indian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Soft (yellow) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions . For the first time, Pirelli issued a recommendation on the durability of the tires at this race. The soft tire compound should be used for a maximum of 15 laps, the medium tire compound for a maximum of 35 laps. Pirelli's recommendation is not binding for the teams, but the FIA reserves the right to impose a penalty if a tire is damaged on a sentence with which more laps have been driven.
With Vettel (twice) the only former winner competed at this Grand Prix.
Gerd Ennser (DEU), Tom Kristensen (DNK), Kamlesh Patel (IND) and Steve Stringwell (GBR) acted as race commissioners .
training
In the first free practice, Vettel set the fastest time ahead of his teammates Mark Webber and Nico Rosberg . James Calado took over Force India from Paul di Resta in this training . Di Resta was not used because he felt uncomfortable and should be spared in this training. Alonso's Ferrari got slow after an hour of practice and had to pit with a gearbox failure; For the last half hour of the training he did not go back on the track and finished the training in twelfth place. In the second practice session, the Red Bull drivers Vettel and Webber stayed ahead. Romain Grosjean came third. Vettel once again had problems with his KERS in this training session . Pastor Maldonado lost a wheel nut and parked his vehicle on the side of the road without losing the loose wheel.
In the third free practice too, Vettel was ahead of Webber. Alonso was third. The training was shortened by 20 minutes because there was too much smog on the track and the rescue helicopter could not start. The smog appeared at different intensities on the track over the entire race weekend.
Qualifying
Jenson Button was the fastest in the first part of qualifying . The Marussia and Caterham pilots as well as Maldonado and Grosjean were eliminated. Grosjean, who was in the top 5 in every training session, was eliminated because, in contrast to many opponents, he relied on the harder tire compound. Besides Grosjean, only Vettel used the harder tire compound. However, he managed to qualify for the next section. In the second part of qualifying, Vettel took the lead. The Toro Rosso and Force India pilots as well as Esteban Gutiérrez and Valtteri Bottas were eliminated. In the last segment, Vettel stayed ahead and achieved pole position in front of Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton .
run
Vettel kept the lead at the start and drove away from the front. Behind it there were some duels and touches. While Massa drove past the Mercedes drivers to second position on the straight, Alonso damaged his front wing in midfield. Chilton and van der Garde collided in the back, which ended the race early for van der Garde.
Meanwhile, Vettel pitted to change tires after the second lap, so that Massa took the lead. Before that, Vettel had completed all of the leading laps at the Indian Grand Prix. Alonso also went to the pits and had the front wing changed. Since he started on the harder tire compound, he had lost his strategic advantage of being able to delay his first stop longer.
In the eighth lap, Massa pitted too. Webber took the lead ahead of Pérez, Ricciardo, Grosjean and Sutil. With the exception of Grosjean, the first five drivers at the time started the race on the harder tire compound. All drivers who started on the soft mix pitted during this phase. Grosjean fell by the wayside the longest with the soft mix. Vettel quickly made up positions and was in third position shortly after his pit stop. Pérez was asked by his team to let Vettel go without a fight so as not to lose time in a position battle.
Vettel caught up with Webber, but there was no duel on the track, as Webber switched to the softer mix for an intermediate sprint on lap 29. Several other riders who started on the harder mix also followed this strategy. Vettel took the lead for a short time, but then also pitted. He made his second and final stop on lap 31. This put Webber back in the lead. Webber pitted two laps after Vettel for a final stop and switched back to the harder mix. Vettel took the lead again.
After the 35th lap, Vettel was leading in front of Webber, Sutil, Raikkonen, Rosberg, Grosjean, Massa, Ricciardo, Hamilton and Pérez. While Sutil hadn't even pitted, Raikkonen and Grosjean had already made a stop. These three drivers tried a one-stop strategy, the other drivers planned two stops. Sutil completed 42 laps on the harder compound before eventually pitting.
Shortly before that, Webber had retired in second place with a defective alternator. Vettel thus led the race ahead of Raikkonen, Rosberg and Grosjean. Of the three drivers behind Vettel, Rosberg had the freshest tires and was gradually catching up on Raikkonen, who had to save fuel in addition to his older tires. On the 53rd lap, Rosberg finally passed to second position. Shortly afterwards, Grosjean and Massa also caught up on Raikkonen. After a small contact between Raikkonen and Grosjean in the 56th lap, Grosjean and Massa passed Raikkonen. A little later, Raikkonen lost two more positions when he was overtaken by Pérez and Hamilton. During this maneuver, Pérez passed both Raikkonen and Hamilton.
Raikkonen, who had now dropped to seventh place, decided to change tires after all, as his lead over the rear drivers was big enough. With the fresh tires he finally drove the fastest race lap.
Vettel won the race ahead of Rosberg and Grosjean. It was Vettel's sixth win in a row and Grosjean finished third for the third time in a row. Massa, Pérez, Hamilton, Raikkonen, di Resta, Sutil and Ricciardo completed the top 10.
Vettel secured the fourth driver's world title in a row with the win. Since his only remaining competitor for the world title, Alonso, crossed the finish line in eleventh place and was therefore not in the top 2, Vettel would have won the world championship in this race with every result. Before Vettel, only Juan Manuel Fangio (a total of five world championship titles) and Michael Schumacher (a total of seven world championship titles) managed to become world champions four times in a row. Vettel drew level with Alain Prost with his fourth world championship in these statistics . However, Prost had not won his world title in a row.
Red Bull-Renault also won the constructors' championship for the fourth time in a row. In second and third position there was an exchange between Mercedes and Ferrari.
Comments from the first three drivers
“First of all, I would like to thank the audience. It was an incredible reception today, and it's a shame we won't be racing here again next year. I'm speechless. I crossed the finish line and felt a sense of emptiness. It took forever to think about what to say. It's one of those moments when you want to say so many things but just can't.
It's been such a phenomenal season. In my opinion the team and the spirit within the team are so strong. I said that on the radio, it gives me so much strength. It is a pleasure to get in the car and go out on the track for the boys and girls, giving everything.
The car was fantastic today. I didn't think about the donuts before the race today, it just happened. My engineer asked me to do the usual procedure, but I said 'No, not this time!' There are so many people in the stands here, I just had to do that. I wanted to say a big thank you to everyone on the team and all the people behind us.
It was definitely not an easy season and while outsiders thought we had it in our hands, I thought it was difficult. For me personally it was a tough season because I got boos even if I didn't do anything wrong. Digesting that and giving the right answer on the track and getting acceptance for it makes me very proud.
It's amazing to join the likes of Prost, Fangio and Michael. In my opinion this is one of the best days of my life so far. There are so many people I have to thank. I've always tried to listen and learn and it's incredible to race against some of the best drivers in the world. "
“Sebastian drove a great race today and his fourth world title is well deserved. It was a very important race for our team too. We scored a lot of points and are now back in second place in the constructors' world championship. I am confident that we will be able to defend this position until the end of the season because the team is doing a great job and our car is good - but a tough battle awaits us.
I had a good pace today and we really hit the spot with the setup here. The team has chosen a fantastic strategy - many thanks to my guys for that. The only downer was that I fell behind Felipe Massa after the start. It wasn't easy to overtake him on the track, but we succeeded in the pit stop. Our goal this weekend was to be 'Best of the Rest' - we succeeded. "
“If I had been told yesterday that I was going to be on the podium, I would have said they were crazy. Right from the start of the race, I felt comfortable on the softer tires and we looked pretty good. Then we put the medium tires on and the car was really fast.
I lost a lot of time behind Esteban Gutierrez, which might cost us the fight for second position. But we managed to recover well afterwards. When I saw that I was fourth with 27 laps left over Felipe Massa, I knew it would be tight against him as we had to watch the tires. We also had a problem with the engine at the end of the race, which made things pretty difficult.
Kimi was really struggling with his tires in the final laps so I managed to get past him. Fortunately, I had enough speed to keep Felipe behind me. Before the race, our best prediction was fourth if we got a strong start and a perfect race. So that was an incredible result and a great performance from the team. "
