The Grand Prix of India was in the Formula 1 season in 2011 until the Formula 1 season in 2013 year as a race of the Formula 1 World Championship in India held. Sebastian Vettel was able to win all three races ; he also secured pole position each time. Vettel also holds the lap record in the race with a time of 1: 27.249 minutes, which he achieved in 2011.

The main sponsor of the event was the Indian telecommunications company Bharti Airtel .

route

The racetrack, the Buddh International Circuit , was built about 50 kilometers south of Delhi in Greater Noida , has a length of 5.137 kilometers and was designed by the well-known racetrack designer Hermann Tilke . The completion date planned for spring 2011 for the course, which has 150,000 seats and is part of a large sports complex, could not be met. However, the official handover took place 12 days before the first race date (October 30, 2011). The construction costs of the route were between 290 and 400 million euros.

history

Despite the very high admission prices for average Indian earners, the first Grand Prix on the course was well attended with 95,000 visitors.

After the number of spectators had dropped dramatically, the Grand Prix was already deleted from the calendar of the Formula 1 World Championship after the third edition. One of the reasons, in addition to the low number of spectators, bureaucratic hurdles and financial problems of the organizer (the Indian Grand Prix was one of the few grands prix not supported by the respective state government), was the tax burden that was too high for the teams. The race was originally planned to return to the calendar for 2015 , then for 2017, but both dates were not included in the respective calendar.
