Under Grand Prix is meant, apart from the motorcycle race , the first of Formula 1 , the first race at the seasons 1976 and 1977 on the Fuji Speedway in Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan took place. Before that, however, other automobile races had also been held under this title since 1963, for example for sports cars, first in Suzuka, then in Fuji.

From 1987 to 2006 the Japanese Grand Prix ( Fuji Television Japanese Grand Prix ) was held annually at the Suzuka International Racing Course near Suzuka in Mie Prefecture .

In 1994 and 1995 two Formula 1 races were held in Japan. This additional race was held under the name of the Pacific Grand Prix at the Tanaka International Circuit in Aida .

In the 2007 season , the Japanese Grand Prix was held again on the completely renovated Fuji Speedway. From 2009, an annual change with Suzuka should take place, which was announced at an FIA press conference in the run-up to the Italian Grand Prix in Monza on September 8, 2007. However, the Toyota Group, operator of the Fuji Speedway, announced on July 7th, 2009 that it would no longer host the Japanese Grand Prix due to financial difficulties. The Japanese Grand Prix has been held annually in Suzuka since 2009 . However , the race has been canceled for 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
