The Japanese Grand Prix in 2014 (officially 2014 Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix ) took place on 5 October at the Suzuka Circuit in Suzuka place and was the 15th race of the Formula 1 World Championship in 2014 . The race was overshadowed by the serious accident of Jules Bianchis , who died of serious injuries nine months later.
Reports
background
After the Singapore Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with three points ahead of Nico Rosberg and 60 points ahead of Daniel Ricciardo . Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 174 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault and with 292 points ahead of Williams .
At the Japanese Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (orange) and P Zero Medium (white) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .
There was only one DRS zone on the start-finish straight , the measuring point was 50 meters in front of the Casio Triangle .
Compared to the previous year, only detailed changes were made to the route. TecPro barriers were installed on the inside of the 130R to improve security, and the area between 130R and Casio Triangle was re-paved. In addition, the street lamps were moved on the outside of the spoon , they are now a little further behind the safety fences.
Marcus Ericsson (five), Jules Bianchi , Kevin Magnussen , Pastor Maldonado (four each), Valtteri Bottas , Adrian Sutil (two each) and Jean-Éric Vergne (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.
With Sebastian Vettel (four times), Fernando Alonso (twice), Kimi Räikkönen , Hamilton and Jenson Button (once each), five former winners competed in this Grand Prix. Alonso and Hamilton each won the Japanese Grand Prix once when the race was held at Fuji Speedway in 2007 and 2008 .
The race stewards were José Abed (MEX), Paul Gutjahr (CHE), Takashi Mitarashi (JPN) and Mika Salo (FIN).
training
In the first free practice, Rosberg was the fastest ahead of Hamilton and Alonso. At Toro Rosso , Max Verstappen took over the cockpit from Vergne. It was first used on a Formula 1 weekend and, at the age of 17 and three days, became the youngest driver to ever take part in a Formula 1 World Championship racing weekend. In addition, Roberto Merhi took over the Caterham from Kamui Kobayashi . Verstappen retired shortly before the end of training with an engine failure. An originally planned assignment by Will Stevens at Marussia failed for formal reasons. In the second free practice, Hamilton took the lead from Rosberg. Bottas finished third. There have been several incidents. Kobayashi lost control of his vehicle at the beginning of the S-curves. Ricciardo hit the tire wall in the last chicane. Esteban Gutiérrez slipped off the track in the Spoon . Magnussen damaged the lawn carpet in the Spoon . Due to an electrical defect in Vergne's vehicle in the last few minutes, the training session was ended prematurely.
In the third free practice, Rosberg set the fastest time ahead of Hamilton and Alonso. Hamilton dropped out due to an accident in the final phase of training.
Qualifying
The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Hamilton drove the fastest lap. The Marussia, Caterham and Lotus pilots were eliminated.
The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Rosberg drove the fastest lap. The Sauber , Force India and Toro Rosso pilots were eliminated.
The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Rosberg finally achieved pole position in front of Hamilton and Bottas.
Maldonado was moved ten positions back because of the use of the sixth internal combustion engine (ICE). Since he could only be moved back by five positions, he took a penalty transfer of five positions into the next race.
run
Before the race it was raining heavily, so that Pérez went off the track as he drove to the starting grid.
The race started behind the safety car because of the heavy rain . Ericsson spun into the gravel in the last corner but was able to continue after the Marshalls pushed him back onto the track. At the end of the third lap, the race was interrupted for about 15 minutes because there was too much water on the track. During the break, the rain subsided, so the race continued behind the safety car. After just a few hundred meters, Alonso had to park his vehicle at the edge of the track. During the following laps the drivers made contradicting statements over the radio. Hamilton asked several times for the race to be released because, in his opinion, the track was already so dry that it was possible to switch to intermediate tires. Vettel, however, complained about aquaplaning at a speed of 80 km / h . When the race was released on lap ten, Rosberg retained the lead. Button and Maldonado were the first drivers to switch to intermediate tires when the safety car came back inside. The other drivers followed suit over the next few laps, with Vettel passing Magnussen and Ricciardo with a later pit stop.
After all drivers had switched to intermediate tires, Rosberg was in the lead ahead of Hamilton, Button, Bottas, Massa, Vettel and Ricciardo. Vettel and Ricciardo were able to pass Massa and Bottas shortly afterwards. On lap 25 the track was so dry that the race management approved the use of DRS on the start-finish straight.
Hamilton eventually put Rosberg under pressure, overtook him on lap 29 and pulled away from him for a few seconds. Like all drivers, both changed tires one more time, but stayed on intermediates. There was a problem with Button's pit stop, he lost several seconds so that Vettel could pass.
After the rain got heavier again, Sutil lost control of his car at the seventh corner on lap 41 and hit the boundary. The vehicle was recovered without sending the safety car onto the track. During the recovery work, Bianchi lost control of his vehicle at the same point and slipped under the recovery vehicle. The roll bar of his vehicle broke and Bianchi was seriously injured. He was treated on the route and taken to the hospital by ambulance. At the hospital he was immediately performed emergency surgery and then transferred to the intensive care unit. Nine months later, Bianchi died as a result of the accident. It was the first fatal accident for the driver in a Formula 1 World Championship race since the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994 , in which Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna had a fatal accident.
Meanwhile, the race continued behind the safety car. Some drivers switched to rain tires and others, like Vettel, who had been third up to that point, to new intermediates. Button had already switched to rain tires immediately after the Sutil accident and had therefore fallen behind Ricciardo. Hamilton and Rosberg stayed out at the top. Hulkenberg stopped at the end of the pit lane. On the 46th lap the race was canceled with the red flag. The result was the status after the 44th round. Accordingly, Hamilton won ahead of Rosberg and Vettel. Ricciardo was fourth, Button fifth. Bottas, Massa, Hülkenberg, Vergne and Pérez completed the top 10. Although Pérez was not eliminated, he was not at the finish in the official final result and ranked tenth. The reason for this was that Pérez had been lapped by Hamilton on the 45th lap and thus had not finished the 44th lap before Hamilton had started his 46th lap.
Maldonado received a subsequent time penalty of 20 seconds for a drive-through penalty that had not been started. However, this did not change his result - 16th place.
In the world championship, the first three positions in both ratings remained unchanged.
