The Grand Prix of Russia in 2014 (officially 2014 Formula 1 Russian Grand Prix ) took place on 12 October at the Sochi Autodrome in Sochi place and was the 16th race of the Formula 1 World Championship in 2014 .

Reports

background

After the Japanese Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with ten points ahead of Nico Rosberg and 73 points ahead of Daniel Ricciardo . Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 190 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault and with 321 points ahead of Williams .

At the Russian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Soft (yellow) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

The route had two DRS zones. The first zone began after curve 1 , the measuring point was just behind the finish line. The second measuring point was before curve 9 , immediately afterwards on the back straight was the second DRS zone.

After Jules Bianchi was seriously injured at the Japanese Grand Prix , Marussia substitute pilot Alexander Rossi was given the cockpit. However, his report was withdrawn on Friday morning and the cockpit was not re-staffed.

Marcus Ericsson (five), Kevin Magnussen , Pastor Maldonado (four each), Valtteri Bottas , Adrian Sutil (two each) and Jean-Éric Vergne (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

The Russian Grand Prix was held for the first time in the history of the Formula 1 World Championship, the last time there was a Russian Grand Prix in 1914, exactly 100 years ago.

Gerd Ennser (DEU), Radovan Novak (CZE), Wassili Skryl (RUS) and Danny Sullivan (USA) acted as race commissioners .

Because of Russia's role in the crisis in Ukraine and the Annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation and the use of major international sporting events as propaganda by Vladimir Putin called for politicians and officials, including Ari Vatanen , prior to the cancellation of the race. Bernie Ecclestone , who is said to have a friendship with Putin in the media, rejected a political role for Formula 1 and said: I see no problem, we have nothing to do with politics . Various team leaders, including John Booth , Federico Gastaldi , Christian Horner , Niki Lauda , Marco Mattiacci , Claire Williams and Toto Wolff , referred in advance to the FIA , which had included the race in the racing calendar and had not canceled it.

training

In the first free practice, Rosberg was the fastest ahead of Hamilton and Jenson Button . Sergei Sirotkin made his debut as a Friday test driver at Sauber and took over the vehicle from Esteban Gutiérrez . In addition, at Caterham Roberto Merhi drove in place of Kamui Kobayashi . The track had little grip in this session, so that several pilots braked themselves. There were no accidents. In the second free practice, Hamilton was the fastest ahead of Magnussen and Alonso. The time difference between the medium and soft tire compounds was significant. Training was interrupted about ten minutes before the end after Ricciardo rolled out with an engine failure. The engine would have been scrapped after the training anyway, so the resulting engine change would not have any consequences.

After the first two training sessions, the speed limit in the pit lane was lowered from 80 km / h to 60 km / h for safety reasons.

In the third free practice, Hamilton stayed in the lead. Rosberg finished second, Bottas third.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Hamilton drove the fastest lap. The Marussia and Caterham pilots as well as Maldonado and Felipe Massa , who had significantly less power available due to a problem with the fuel pump, were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton drove the fastest lap. The Sauber and Force India pilots as well as Romain Grosjean and Sebastian Vettel were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Hamilton finally achieved pole position ahead of Rosberg and Bottas, who made a mistake in the last corner on his last lap and was therefore unable to improve despite the best times in the first two sectors. With fifth place, Daniil Kwjat achieved the best starting position of his Formula 1 career to date.

Maldonado was moved five positions back for a penalty transfer from Japan that was still outstanding and received a further starting place penalty of five positions for a premature gear change. Max Chilton , Nico Hülkenberg and Magnussen were moved five positions back because they changed their gearbox prematurely.

run

At the start, Hamilton stayed in front, but Rosberg passed Hamilton on the outside before the second corner. He braked himself and drove through the run-off zone. He was initially ahead of Hamilton, but allowed himself to be overtaken because he had to change tires due to vibrations after the brakes. He opted for the medium tire compound so that he no longer needed to make another pit stop. Massa also came into the pits at the end of the first lap and switched from the hard to the soft tire compound. Magnussen started well and improved from eleventh to sixth place on the first lap. At the end of the first lap, Hamilton was leading in front of Bottas, Button, Alonso, Vergne, Magnussen, Sebastian Vettel , Kwjat and Ricciardo.

While Rosberg worked his way forward and overtook several drivers, Hamilton took the lead. In the first half of the race, Chilton retired with a defective wheel suspension and Kobayashi with overheated brakes. Most drivers use a one-stop strategy. Of the leading group, Hamilton stayed the longest, so he stayed in the lead throughout. At Alonso's pit stop there was a problem with the jack, so that he fell behind Magnussen. After his stop, Bottas stayed in front of Rosberg, who had passed all the other drivers after his stop. Three laps after Bottas' stop, Rosberg also overtook him and pulled away from him. However, he was unable to reduce the gap to Hamilton, which was around 20 seconds at the time of the overtaking maneuver, more significantly.

In the back of the field there was contact between Grosjean and Sutil. Both drivers drove on. Grosjean received a five-second time penalty for triggering the collision and was given two penalty points. Since he was in the pits for the last time, the time was added to his race result. Ultimately, the penalty had no influence on the race result.

In the final phase of the race, Bottas and Rosberg drove the fastest laps of the race. Rosberg, whose tires offered good grip again at the end, drove his fastest lap on 51 lap old tires on the penultimate lap, which was the fastest race lap at the time. Bottas undercut this time in the final lap.

Hamilton won the race ahead of Rosberg and Bottas. With his ninth win, Hamilton prematurely became the driver with the most victories in the 2014 World Championship. Button and Magnussen in fourth and fifth achieved the second-best result of the season for McLaren to date. Alonso, Ricciardo, Vettel, Räikkönen and Pérez completed the top 10. After the race, Vettel regretted that due to missing parts it was not possible in Sochi to completely change the engine unit and thus to cancel the penalty for using additional elements on a route that his vehicle did not suit.

With the double victory, Mercedes secured the constructors' championship for the first time early. The racing team last won the designer's title in 2009 , then under the name Brawn . The first three positions remained unchanged. The top three positions also remained unchanged in the drivers' world championship. Only these three drivers had theoretical title chances after the race.
