Sergei Olegowitsch Sirotkin , also Sergey Sirotkin ( Russian Сергей Олегович Сироткин ; born August 27, 1995 in Moscow ), is a Russian racing driver . In 2011 he won the European championship of Formula Abarth . He competed in Formula Renault 3.5 from 2012 to 2014 . In 2015 and 2016 he drove in the GP2 series . In 2018 he drove for Williams in Formula 1 .
Career
Sirotkin began his motorsport career in karting in 2008 , where he was active until 2010. In 2010 he also made his debut in Formula racing and went during the season for Jenzer Motorsport in the Formula Abarth one. He regularly scored points and was 18th in the drivers' championship. In 2011 Sirotkin initially stayed with Jenzer Motorsport in Formula Abarth. After the first half of the season he moved to Euronova Racing by Fortec within the series . He won five races. In the European standings, he prevailed with ten podium placements and 175 points against Patric Niederhauser , who had scored 138 points. In the Italian standings he was on the podium nine times. In this evaluation he was defeated by Niederhauser with 136 to 149 points and was runner-up.
In 2012 Sirotkin competed in both the Auto GP World Series and the Italian Formula 3 championship for Euronova Racing. In the Auto GP World Series, he achieved the fastest lap in the first four races. In the second race he improved from 14th place to fourth place. At the second race weekend in Valencia , Sirotkin won the first race and came third in the second race. With a total of nine podium finishes and two wins, he was third overall. In the Italian Formula 3 championship he was fifth in the drivers' championship with two wins. Since the Auto GP World Series and the Italian Formula 3 Championship held their races in parallel on two weekends, Sirotkin took part in five races each on these weekends. Sirotkin also took part in a Formula Renault 3.5 event for BVM Target .
In 2013 Sirotkin switched completely to Formula Renault 3.5. He received a cockpit at ISR Racing . At the fourth race in Motorland Aragón he was second on the podium. In the further course of the season he achieved another podium placement with a third place. Sirotkin finished the season in ninth place. With 61 to 25 points he prevailed against Christopher Zanella within the team .
In 2014 Sirotkin moved to Fortec Motorsport within the Formula Renault 3.5 . In Volokolamsk he achieved his first victory. Internally he was defeated by Oliver Rowland with 132 to 181 points and was fifth in the drivers' standings. In addition, Sirotkin took on the role of test and substitute driver for Sauber in Formula 1 in 2014 . In this role he took part in the first free practice session at the Russian Grand Prix .
In 2015 Sirotkin competed for Rapax in the GP2 series . In the sprint race in Monte Carlo , he achieved his first podium finish with third place. He achieved his first victory in the main race at Silverstone . Sirotkin stood on the podium five times and finished the season in third place overall.
In 2016 Sirotkin switched to ART Grand Prix , the championship team of the previous year, within the GP2 series . He won a race each in Mogyoród and Hockenheim . In the championship, as in the previous year, he came third in the overall classification.
In 2017 he represented the injured ART Grand Prix driver Alexander Albon during the race weekend in Baku .
Sirotkin received a cockpit from Williams for the 2018 Formula 1 World Championship . He chose # 35 as his permanent starting number. In his debut race he was eliminated. At the end of the season he finished 20th and last place overall with a World Championship point. For the 2019 Formula 1 World Championship , he was no longer given a cockpit as a regular driver, but became an official reserve driver at Renault .
