The 2019 Formula 1 World Championship was the 70th season of the Formula 1 World Championship . It began on March 17th in Melbourne, Australia and ended on December 1st on Yas Island off Abu Dhabi . Lewis Hamilton became world driver champion for the sixth time. Mercedes won the Constructors' World Championship for the sixth time in a row .
Changes in 2019
Technical regulations
Several new rules in the field of aerodynamics have been established. The front wing was widened from 1800 to 2000 mm, and the structure was simplified. The aerodynamically very complex front wings were considered to be the main reason why the aerodynamics of a vehicle when driving behind another vehicle was severely disrupted by so-called dirty air . At the same time, the rear wing was widened from 950 mm to 1050 mm and the height changed from 800 mm to 820 mm. In addition, the height of the upper wing profile, which is folded up when the DRS is activated , has been increased from 65 to 85 mm. In addition, winglets on the brake ventilation were now prohibited.
To increase the safety of the drivers, new gloves have been introduced that check and report data such as the driver's pulse and oxygen saturation . It was hoped that this would provide important data on the health of the driver, especially during and after an accident. In addition, a new helmet standard was introduced, which improved safety in several points.
The minimum weight for the unit consisting of the driver including his equipment and the seat now had to be at least 80 kg. However, in the area of the cockpit opening, a ballast weight that was permanently attached and sealed by the FIA was allowed to be added to the weight of the driver. In addition, the minimum weight of the vehicle increased from 733 kg to 740 kg.
In qualifying, the additional oil tank in the vehicle now had to remain empty. In addition to the central rear light, the vehicles now had two LED lights attached to the side of the rear wing end plates.
Sporting regulations
The maximum amount of fuel in the race has been increased from 105 kg to 110 kg. The rights holders hoped that the races would be more exciting, as the drivers had to pay less attention to their fuel consumption.
Should several drivers be moved to the end of the field on the grid due to penalties, the result of the qualifying will now decide the order of these drivers. Before that, the decisive factor was the order in which the drivers took to the track during the first free practice.
When the race was released after a safety car phase, overtaking was only allowed from the finish line. Previously, this was allowed from the first safety car line (usually the pit entrance).
The teams were still allowed to bring 60 people to the race track to look after the vehicles. However, they have now received a total of six times a season to bring a new employee down to train. Each new employee was allowed to use the exception rule a maximum of two times.
If a driver starts the race from the pit lane, he was allowed to take part in the introductory lap. However, at the end of the lap he had to turn back into the pit lane.
The driver with the fastest race lap received an additional point, which was also credited to his team in the constructors' championship. An additional requirement for this was a finish among the top ten drivers. There was an additional point for the fastest race lap between 1950 and 1959.
Engine suppliers
After twelve years with Renault engines, which were last used under the TAG Heuer name , Red Bull Racing , like its sister team Scuderia Toro Rosso in the previous year, now started with engines from Honda .
Racing Point used the Mercedes engines this season under the name BWT Mercedes . Despite the name, the engines were identical to those used by the Mercedes works team and Williams.
Teams
Sauber Motorsport now competed under the registration name Alfa Romeo Racing . After 26 years, the name Sauber disappeared from the entry list for the Formula 1 World Championship. The name change was just a form of title sponsorship. The Milan-based car manufacturer Alfa Romeo did not take over any shares in the racing team and was also not technically or organizationally involved. The team continued to drive with a Swiss license. As in previous years, the engines came from Ferrari.
Ferrari entered the Australian Grand Prix at short notice without the addition of Mission Winnow in the team name, as the Australian authorities had started an investigation into a violation of the tobacco advertising ban . Mission Winnow is a brand name of long-time Ferrari sponsor Philip Morris International . For the same reason Ferrari did not use the addition Mission Winnow in other races, including in Canada and France, and did not put any corresponding lettering on the vehicle or team clothing.
Haas started at the Singapore Grand Prix without the addition of Rich Energy in the team name. The sponsorship contract with the energy drink manufacturer of the same name, which was concluded before the season started, was terminated by mutual agreement after the Italian Grand Prix .
driver
Daniel Ricciardo switched from Red Bull Racing to Renault . His successor there was Pierre Gasly , who left Scuderia Toro Rosso after a full season. Gasly, in turn, has been replaced at Toro Rosso by Daniil Kwjat , who started for the team in 2014 , 2016 and 2017 . Kwjat's teammate was the previous Formula 2 driver Alexander Albon , who replaced Brendon Hartley . Albon terminated its existing contract with Nissan e.dams for the FIA Formula E championship 2018/19 . Hartley changes to Ferrari as a simulator driver .
McLaren driver Fernando Alonso ended his career in the Formula 1 World Championship after 17 years. His successor was Carlos Sainz Jr. who moved from Renault to McLaren . Teammate of Sainz was Lando Norris , who made his debut in the Formula 1 World Championship and replaced Stoffel Vandoorne , who switched to the FIA Formula E Championship at HWA Racelab and also became a simulator driver at Mercedes .
Charles Leclerc and Kimi Raikkonen swapped cockpits at Ferrari and Alfa Romeo Racing . Raikkonen's new team-mate was Antonio Giovinazzi , who replaced Marcus Ericsson . However, Ericsson stayed with Alfa Romeo Racing as a test and reserve driver.
Lance Stroll and Sergei Sirotkin no longer competed for Williams . Instead, the team signed George Russell , who made his Formula 1 World Championship debut after winning the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2018 , and Robert Kubica , who suffered serious injuries after his rally accident in 2011 on the right hand when the regular driver returned to Formula 1. He last drove for Renault in the Formula 1 World Championship in 2010 . For his part, Stroll switched to Racing Point , whose predecessor racing team Force India had been taken over by a consortium led by his father in mid-2018. He replaced Esteban Ocon , who in turn was test and replacement driver at Mercedes.
Albon and Gasly swapped cockpits from the Belgian Grand Prix .
tires
Standard tire supplier Pirelli developed five different tire compounds with different degrees of hardness. For the sake of clarity, however, the many colors and names of the mixtures, which differ from race to race, have been omitted. The drivers now always had the three tire compounds P Zero Hard , P Zero Medium and P Zero Soft at their disposal on the race weekend , but they sometimes concealed different degrees of hardness. The tires were marked in the colors white for the hardest, yellow for the medium and red for the softest available compound. The individual mixtures were named C1 to C5 , where the C stands for compound and the number consecutively for the respective degree of hardness, the higher the softer. The color markings for the intermediate (green) and heavy-wet tires (blue) remained unchanged.
Teams and drivers
The overview lists all drivers who have signed a contract with the racing team as regular, test or substitute drivers for the 2019 season. The teams are arranged according to the constructors' championship of the previous year.
Racing calendar
The provisional racing calendar, which included 21 races, was presented on August 31, 2018. The Chinese Grand Prix was the 1000th race in the history of the Formula 1 World Championship or the World Automobile Championship.
