report

backgrounds

After the Monaco Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with 17 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas and 45 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes was ahead of Ferrari with 118 points and Red Bull Racing with 147 points .

At the Canadian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (white, compound C2 ), P Zero Medium (yellow, C3 ) and P Zero Soft (red, C4 ), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full for wet conditions -Wets (blue) available.

There were small adjustments in some parts of the route. A new drain was installed on the inside in turn two . Between turn four and turn ten there were new concrete walls and safety fences. There were other changes in turn ten and turn 13 . The mockingly "Wall of Champions" wall at the exit of Turn 14 has been renewed. In addition, the entire pit area was torn down and replaced by a new building.

As in the previous year, there were again three DRS zones. The first measuring point was 15 meters behind curve five , the activation point 95 meters after curve seven . The other two zones shared the second measuring point 110 meters before turn nine . The activation points then followed 155 meters before turn twelve and 70 meters after turn 14 .

With Hamilton (six times), Vettel (twice), Raikkonen , Kubica and Ricciardo (once each) five former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Vettel was fastest. Pérez , Raikkonen , the Williams pilots and Stroll were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Bottas was again fastest. Verstappen , Kvyat , Giovinazzi , Albon and Grosjean were eliminated. Since Magnussen had an accident in the last corner a few seconds before the end of the session, Verstappen, Grosjean, Ricciardo, Hülkenberg and Sainz , among others, could only drive one fast lap.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. With a lap time of 1: 10.240 minutes, Vettel set the fastest time ahead of Hamilton and Leclerc. It was the 56th pole position for Vettel in the Formula 1 World Championship.
