The old town is a main street in the inner city of Hof in Bavaria .

history

The first documented settlement in the old town was around 1180. At that time, however, it had no town charter. In 1230 the Andechs-Meranians had the Neustadt built, which eventually also received town charter. In 1864 the construction of the first Catholic church in Hof, the Marienkirche, began on the site of the former Gasthof Zur Sonne . It stands between the old town and Lorenzstrasse.

In the 20th century, large parts of the old two-story houses were torn down and exchanged for urban development from around 1900 to 1910. The Saalekaufhaus already existed in the old town in the 1920s. After the Second World War , the Wilhelminian-style department store was replaced by a new building by Kaufhof . The present building is due to the unique facade from the 1950s under monument protection . However, the facade is no longer durable for static reasons and so the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation has also approved its demolition. A four-star hotel has been under construction in the Kaufhof building since 2018.

Attractions

The Marienkirche is a landmark in the old town. In fact, it lies between Lorenzstrasse and Bismarckstrasse, but the striking double tower facade on the front side faces the old town.
