The city center district is located in the center of the city of Hof and consists of the old town and the new town.

Old town

The old town lies around the street of the same name and is today's center of the city of Hof. It stretches from Lorenzstrasse with the Church of St. Lorenz and Bismarckstrasse in the south, over Bernhard-Lichtenberg-Platz with the city church of St. Marien to the Upper Gate. Due to urban development in Art Nouveau style and in the early 20th century, parts of it appear newer than the new town. The Altstadt street is a central shopping street with department stores and branches of international chains, there are several cafes and the Centralkino. In 2020, the “Hof Galerie” shopping center is to be built on Bismarckstrasse in the am Strauss district in the south of the old town. The name comes from the Hotel Strauss of the same name, which has existed since 1826 and was rebuilt in 1926.

The Obere Tor is the connection between the old town and the new town. It was already mentioned by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , who stayed in Hof on the trip to the spa triangle and mentioned it with praise. The square is to be redesigned with the installation of granite floors and the installation of lighting elements.

Neustadt

The medieval development of the Neustadt was almost completely destroyed by the great fire in 1823 and rebuilt in the Biedermeier style. Today you can find owner-managed shops there. Well-preserved building ensembles are in Ludwigstrasse , Klosterstrasse, Karolinenstrasse with the town hall and on Maxplatz with the St. Michaelis Church . The weekly market is held twice a week at Maxplatz and Ludwigstrasse. There are also other festivals and markets in the old town and the new town such as the German-Czech Friendship Day, the citizens' festival and the autumn market.

Attractions

traffic

Until the opening of the Hof Galerie and the bus station, which will also be rebuilt and will be located right next to the shopping center, the Sonnenplatz stop will serve as a temporary bus station. Until the introduction of the complete pedestrian zone, buses also drove directly through the old town. In the Neustadt there are the stops Oberes Tor, Karlstraße, Rathaus and Unteres Tor. The city plans to use an autonomous bus between the main train station, the old town and Ludwigstrasse.
