The factory suburb is a district in the east district of the independent city of Hof in Bavaria .

Location and history

The factory suburb is east of the Saale opposite the city center . Because of its location in the Saale valley, there are considerable inclines from west to east.

Most of the factory suburbs developed during industrialization . Before 1900 there were many factories there, a large area of which still exists. A vacant area was used for the construction of modern student apartments, with more to follow. Most of the buildings date from the founding period . Some houses were destroyed in the bombing of Leimitzer Strasse .

Attractions

One of the attractions is the Protestant St. John's Church, which was built in 1937. The unplastered tower , which looks much older than the modern nave, is striking .

In addition, the east side of the Saale belongs to the district . Although not designed as a park, like the Saaleauen on the west side, there is a path for pedestrians and cyclists as well as lawns.

Economy and Infrastructure

The factory suburb emerged from the establishment of large companies in the 19th century. The former textile group, an amalgamation of several small spinning mills , was based there. Today, the successor company, the Hoftex Group, is located there . In the building of the renovated company headquarters from the time of industrialization , other institutions have also settled, such as the adult education center.

Gärtla

In the district there is a district called Gärtla. However, it has nothing to do with a garden, but means quarter. Alternatively, there is also the name Vertl. The name Gärtla is still very common in Hofer usage, for example there is also a bus stop called Gärtla in the district.
