Andrew "Andy" Saul Levin (born August 10, 1960 in Berkley , Michigan ) is an American lawyer , entrepreneur and politician . As a member of the Democratic Party , he has held the ninth seat of the state of Michigan in the United States House of Representatives since January 3, 2019 . He was elected to this office on November 6, 2018 and was sworn in on January 3, 2019. He replaced his father Sander M. Levin in this office.

Life

Andrew Levin was born and raised on August 10, 1960 in Berkley , Michigan, to Sander M. Levin and Vicki Schlafer. He has two sisters: Jennifer and Madeleine and a brother named Matthew.

Levin graduated from Williams College with a bachelor's degree , received his Masters in Asian Languages ​​from the University of Michigan, and a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School . He founded the clean energy company Levin Energy Partners LLC and is President of Lean & Green Michigan .

Political career

Andy Levin ran for the 13th seat in the Michigan Senate in 2006 , losing the election by 0.6 percentage points (776 votes) against Republican John Pappageorge .

After this election, he led Voice @ Work, a union expansion program .

In 2007, Governor Jennifer Granholm appointed Levin Deputy Director of the Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth (DELEG). He oversaw the No Worker Left Behind program, which provided job training to the unemployed .

In 2009 Granholm appointed him Chief Workforce Officer and from 2010 to 2011 he was Deputy Director of DELEG.

Andy Levin won the Democratic primary election for Michigan State's second seat in the United States House of Representatives with 52.4 percent of the vote against Ellen Lipton , who won 42.4 percent.

He won the election for the ninth seat of the state of Michigan in the United States House of Representatives on November 6, 2018 against Candius Stearns of the Republican Party with 59.7 percent of the vote. Third place went to Andrea Kirby with 2.2 percent of the vote.
