Carl E. Mapes

Carl Edgar Mapes (born December 26, 1874 in Kalamo , Eaton County , Michigan , †  December 12, 1939 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) was an American politician . Between 1913 and 1939 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Carl Mapes attended public schools in his home country and Olivet College , which he graduated from in 1896. After a subsequent law degree at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and his admission to the bar in 1899, he began to work in Grand Rapids in his new profession. Between 1900 and 1904 he was the assistant prosecutor in Kent County .

Politically, Mapes became a member of the Republican Party . From 1905 to 1907 he was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives ; between 1909 and 1913 he was a member of the State Senate . In the congressional elections of 1912 Mapes was the fifth electoral district of Michigan in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC chosen, where he succeeded the on March 4, 1913 Democrat Edwin F. Sweet took. After 13 re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death in December 1939 . The First World War fell during this time . During Mapes' time in Congress, the 16th , 17th , 18th , 19th , 20th and 21st amendments were passed there. Between 1933 and 1939, most of the federal government's New Deal laws were debated and enacted under President Franklin D. Roosevelt . Mapes' party, however, was rather critical to hostile to these reforms. Between 1919 and 1921 Mapes was chairman of the District of Columbia Administration Committee.

He died in New Orleans on December 12, 1939 and was buried in Grand Rapids. His member of parliament fell in a by-election to his party colleague Bartel J. Jonkman . Carl Mapes was married to Julia Pike (1874–1948), with whom he had four children.
