Melbourne H. Ford

Melbourne Haddock Ford (born June 30, 1849 in Salem , Washtenaw County , Michigan , †  April 20, 1891 in Grand Rapids , Michigan) was an American politician . Between 1887 and 1889 and again in 1891 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1859, Melbourne Ford moved with his parents to Lansing , where he attended public schools and then Michigan State College of Agriculture . He joined the US Navy in 1864 during the Civil War . He remained until 1868 in the Navy and was since 1867 in the management of the US Naval Academy in Annapolis ( Maryland active). Ford moved to Grand Rapids in 1873. There he worked as a stenographer on various courts in the following years . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1878, he began to practice in his new profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

Ford was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives in 1885 and 1886 . In the congressional election of 1886 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Michigan , where he succeeded Charles C. Comstock on March 4, 1887 . Since he in the elections of 1888 the Republicans Charles E. Belknap was defeated, he could only one term in until March 3, 1889 Congress completed.

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Melbourne Ford worked again as a lawyer. In 1890 he was chairman of the Michigan regional Democratic Party convention. In the congressional elections of the same year, he managed to win back his previous mandate in Congress. He was able to oust Belknap again on March 4, 1891. However, he could not enjoy this mandate for very long, as he died a few weeks later, on April 20, 1891. The following by-elections won again Charles Belknap, who was Ford successor in Congress for the second time.
