George Spalding

George Spalding (born November 12, 1836 in Blairgowrie , Perthshire , Scotland , †  September 13, 1915 in Monroe , Michigan ) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1899 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1843, George Spalding and his parents came to the United States, where the family first settled in Buffalo , New York . There he attended public schools. After moving to Monroe, Michigan, he taught in his new hometown in 1860 and 1861. During the Civil War he served as an officer in a cavalry unit from Tennessee in the Union Army . At the end of the war he had made it to the colonel. From 1866 to 1870 Spalding was a post holder in Monroe. He then worked for the Federal Ministry of Finance between 1871 and 1875. In 1876 Spalding was elected mayor of Monroe. He was also chairman of the education committee. Between 1885 and 1897 he was a member of the State Industrial Home for Girls' control committee . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1878, he began to work in his new profession.

Politically, Spalding was a member of the Republican Party . In the congressional election of 1894 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Michigan , where he succeeded James S. Gorman on March 4, 1895 . After a re-election in 1896, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1899 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . At that time the Philippines and Hawaii came under American administration.

In 1898 Spalding was no longer nominated for re-election by his party. Between 1899 and 1907 he was again a postman in Monroe. At the same time he worked as a lawyer as well as in agriculture. George Spalding also became President of the First National Bank of Monroe . He died on September 13, 1915 in his hometown of Monroe, where he was also buried.
