Jabez G. Sutherland

Jabez Gridley Sutherland (born October 6, 1825 in Van Buren , Onondaga County , New York , † November 20, 1902 in Berkeley , California ) was an American lawyer, judge and politician from Michigan .

Career

Sutherland finished his preparatory studies, studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1848. He then began to practice in Saginaw , Michigan, and served as a district attorney in Saginaw County from 1848 to 1849 . He was then a delegate to the state constituent assemblies in 1850 and 1867, and a member of the Michigan House of Representatives in 1853 . Sutherland held the office of judge in the 10th judicial district of Michigan from 1863 until his resignation in 1871 when he ran for the US Congress . He was elected a Democrat to the 42nd US Congress , where he served the 6th Congressional constituencyrepresented by Michigan. He was a member of the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1873; In 1872 he did not stand for re-election.

Sutherland moved to Salt Lake City in 1873 , where he resumed his practice as a lawyer. He was a faculty member of the later University of Utah in 1889 and president of the territorial bar association in 1894 and 1895. He then moved to California in 1897, where he died in Berkeley. He was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Salt Lake City.
