Harold Samuel Sawyer (born March 21, 1920 in San Francisco , California , †  April 3, 2003 in Kent County , Michigan ) was an American politician . Between 1977 and 1985 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Harold Sawyer attended his home public schools and Marin Junior College . He then studied until 1940 at the University of California at Berkeley . During World War II , Sawyer served in the US Navy between 1941 and 1945 . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began working in his new profession in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Between 1968 and 1976 Sawyer served on a commission to review Michigan state law. He was a Kent County attorney in 1975 and 1976.

Politically, Sawyer was a member of the Republican Party . In the 1976 congressional elections , he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Michigan , where he succeeded Richard Vander Veen on January 3, 1977 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1985 . In 1984 he renounced another candidacy. After leaving the US House of Representatives, he withdrew from politics. Harold Sawyer died on April 3, 2003 at his estate in the small town of Algoma .
