Edward P. Allen

Edward Payson Allen (born October 28, 1839 in Sharon , Washtenaw County , Michigan , †  November 25, 1909 in Ypsilanti , Michigan) was an American politician . Between 1887 and 1891 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Edward Allen attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1864 the State Normal School in Ypsilanti. After graduating there, he took part in the formation of an infantry regiment towards the end of the civil war . Since September 1864 he took an active part in the war as a first lieutenant in the army of the Union . By the time he left military service in September 1865, he was promoted to captain.

After studying law at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and being admitted to the bar in 1867, he began working in his new profession in Ypsilanti. In 1869 he worked for the tax authorities for some time. In 1872 Allen became a district attorney in Washtenaw County. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . From 1872 to 1874 he was a member of the Ypsilanti municipal council. He was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 1876 ​​and 1878, and became its incumbent president in 1878. In 1880 Allen was elected mayor of Ypsilanti. In 1882 and 1885 he was Indian commissioner for the state of Michigan.

In the congressional election of 1886 , Allen was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the second constituency of Michigan , where he succeeded Nathaniel B. Eldredge on March 4, 1887 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1891 . In the elections of 1890 he was defeated by the Democrat James S. Gorman . After leaving the US House of Representatives, Allen returned to work as a lawyer. Between 1897 and 1903 he was a member of the Agriculture Committee of his home state. In the years 1899 and 1900 he once again acted as mayor of Ypsilanti. He was then a member of the State soldiers' home board of the State of Michigan from 1903 to 1909 . Edward Allen died on November 25, 1909 in his hometown of Ypsilanti.
