David E. Bonior

David Edward Bonior (born June 6, 1945 in Detroit , Michigan ) is an American politician . Between 1977 and 2003 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Life

David Bonior attended Notre Dame High School in Pontiac until 1963 and then studied at the University of Iowa in Iowa City until 1967 . Between 1968 and 1972 he served in the US Air Force . He then completed his education at Chapman College in Orange ( California ). Politically, Bonior joined the Democratic Party . Between 1973 and 1977 he was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives . During the same period he was a regular delegate to the regional party congresses at the state level.

In the 1976 congressional elections , he was elected to the 12th constituency of Michigan in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded James G. O'Hara on January 3, 1977 . After twelve re-elections, he was able to complete a total of 13 legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 2003 . Since 1993 he represented there as the successor of David Lee Camp the tenth district. Bonior was against the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and attracted many accusations against the Republican speaker Newt Gingrich . From September 11, 1991 to January 15, 2002 he served as the Whip of the Democratic Group.

In 2002 Bonior declined to run again. Instead, he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for gubernatorial elections . He later became Professor of Labor Studies at Wayne State University . He also founded the organization American Rights at Work , of which he is still chairman. This organization supports the trade unions and workers' rights. In 2008, Bonior headed the presidential campaign of John Edwards until its withdrawal during the primaries.
