Jesse P. Wolcott

Jesse Paine Wolcott (March 3, 1893 in Gardner , Worcester County , Massachusetts , †  January 28, 1969 in Chevy Chase , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1931 and 1957 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jesse Wolcott attended his home public schools and then the Detroit Technical Institute . After a subsequent law degree at the Detroit College of Law and his admission as a lawyer in 1915, he began to work in Detroit in his new profession. During the First World War he was from 1917 and 1919 a lieutenant in a machine gun unit. After the war he moved to Port Huron where he practiced as a lawyer. In 1921 he was also deputy police judge there; from 1922 to 1926 he served as the assistant district attorney in St. Clair County . He was then a regular public prosecutor until 1930.

Politically, Wolcott was a member of the Republican Party . In the 1930 congressional elections , he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Michigan , where he succeeded Louis C. Cramton on March 4, 1931 . After twelve re-elections, he was able to complete a total of 13 legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1957 . During this period, the New Deal laws were passed in the 1930s, the Second World War and its aftermath, the beginning of the Cold War , the civil rights movement and the Korean War . At that time the 20th , 21st and 22nd amendments to the constitution were passed in Congress. From 1947 to 1949 and again from 1953 to 1955 Wolcott was chairman of the banking and currency committee . From 1953 to 1955 he also headed the Joint Committee on Economic Report .

In 1956 Wolcott renounced another candidacy. In 1958 he became a director of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation , of which he was president until 1964. Then he retired. Jesse Wolcott died on January 28, 1969 in Chevy Chase and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery , Virginia .
