Career

Mark Siljander attended his homeland public schools including Oak Park-River Forest High School , which he graduated from in 1969. He then studied until 1973 at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo . He then started working in the real estate industry.

Politically, Siljander joined the Republican Party . In 1980 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Detroit , where Ronald Reagan was nominated as a presidential candidate. Between 1977 and 1981, Siljander was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives . After the resignation of Congressman David Stockman , he was elected to the House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the due by-election for the fourth seat of Michigan , where he took up his new mandate on April 21, 1981. After two re-elections, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 1987 . In 1986 he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party.

In 1987 and 1988, Mark Siljander was one of the American delegates to the UN General Assembly . In 1992 he applied unsuccessfully to return to Congress. He also ran an import and export company and worked temporarily as a radio commentator.

In the 2000s, Siljander came into conflict with the law: on January 16, 2008, he was charged with money laundering , conspiracy and obstruction of justice, among other things . Specifically, he had tried, without registering as a lobbyist, on behalf of the Sudan-based Islamic American Relief Agency (IARA) to have it removed from the list of sponsors of international terrorism. On July 7, 2010, he pleaded guilty. He has also been involved in opaque money transfers to Pakistan . Siljander's proximity to the evangelical network known as The Family (also known as the "Fellowship"), which organizes the annual National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, DC , plays a role in the background . With Trac5 he founded an organization that is closely linked to The Family and aims to create a bridge between Islam and Christianity, referring to the role of Jesus in both the Bible and the Koran. In 2011 Siljander was sentenced to one year in prison.
