Carlos Douglas Shelden (born June 10, 1840 in Walworth , Walworth County , Wisconsin , †  June 24, 1904 in Houghton , Michigan ) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1903 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1847, Carlos Shelden moved to Michigan’s Houghton County with his parents . He attended the Union School in Ypsilanti . During the Civil War , Shelden was a captain in a Michigan infantry unit under the Union Army . After the war, he moved to Houghton, where he worked in the mining and real estate markets. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party .

In 1892 Shelden was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives; In 1894 he became a member of the State Senate . In the congressional election of 1896 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the twelfth constituency of Michigan , where he succeeded Samuel M. Stephenson on March 4, 1897 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1903 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell .

In 1902 Carlos Shelden was no longer nominated for re-election by his party. He died on June 24, 1904 in Houghton, where he was also buried.
