Roswell P. Bishop
Roswell Peter Bishop (born January 6, 1843 in Sidney , Delaware County , New York , † March 4, 1920 in Pacific Grove , California ) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1907 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Roswell Bishop attended public schools in his home in New York State. He then worked as a teacher himself for a few years. At the beginning of the civil war he became a soldier in the Union Army . In 1862 he was so badly wounded that his right arm had to be amputated. As a result, he retired from the army in December of that year. Until 1872 he studied at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1875, he began to work in Ludington (Michigan) in his new profession. He was a prosecutor in Mason County in 1876, 1878, and 1884 .
Politically, Bishop was a member of the Republican Party . He was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives in 1882 and 1892 . In the congressional election of 1894 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Michigan , where he succeeded John W. Moon on March 4, 1895 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1907 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . At that time the Philippines and Hawaii came under American administration. Between 1901 and 1907 Bishop was chairman of the Committee on Ventilation and Acoustics .
In 1906, Bishop was no longer nominated for re-election by his party. In the following years he worked as a lawyer in Ludington. In 1907 he was a delegate to a meeting to revise the Michigan constitution. In the same year he became a member of the Spanish Treaty Claims Commission , which dealt with mutual claims that arose after the peace treaty of the war of 1898. After this commission was dissolved, Bishop moved to Hollister , California, in 1910 , where he worked in the fruit growing business. He died on March 4, 1920 in Pacific Grove.
