Joseph "Joe" Knollenberg (born November 28, 1933 in Mattoon , Illinois , † February 6, 2018 in Troy , Michigan ) was an American politician . Between 1993 and 2009 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joe Knollenberg studied at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston until 1955 . Between 1955 and 1957 he served in the US Army . He then worked in the insurance industry for over 30 years. Politically, Knollenberg became a member of the Republican Party . From 1978 to 1982 he headed the party in Oakland County , Michigan.

In the 1992 congressional elections , he was elected to the Eleventh constituency of Michigan in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Robert William Davis on January 3, 1993 . After seven re-elections, he was able to complete eight legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 2009 . Since 2003 he represented there after a reorganization of the constituencies as the successor of Dale E. Kildee the ninth district of Michigan. In Congress, Knollenberg was temporarily a member of the Approval Committee and two of its sub-committees.

In the 2008 elections, Knollenberg was defeated by Democrat Gary Peters . He had two sons with his wife, Sandie. Marty Knollenberg (* 1963) is a member of the Michigan House of Representatives.
