Brenda L. Lawrence (born October 18, 1954 in Detroit , Michigan ) is an American politician . She has represented the state in the US House of Representatives since January 2015 .

Career

Brenda Lawrence attended Pershing High School in Detroit. She then studied at the University of Detroit and Central Michigan University . Professionally, she became a manager at the United States Postal Service . Politically, she joined the Democratic Party . Between 1992 and 1996 she was a member of the Southfield Ward Education Committee . Afterwards she was a member of the local council from 1997 to 2001. Between 2001 and 2014 she was the mayor of this place. In 2008 she ran unsuccessfully for the office of the County Executive in Oakland County ; 2010 failed a candidacy for the post of lieutenant governor of Michigan.

In the 2014 congressional election , Lawrence was elected to the US House of Representatives in Michigan's 14th constituency in Washington, DC , where she succeeded Gary Peters , who moved to the US Senate , on January 3, 2015 . She won with 78:20 percent of the vote against Republican Christina Barr. Since she was confirmed in office in 2016, she will also serve in the 115th Congress of the United States, which meets on January 3, 2017 . Your new legislative period runs until January 3, 2019 with the option of a further candidacy in 2018.
