The 1998 Canadian Grand Prix (officially Grand Prix Player's du Canada ) took place on June 7th at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal and was the seventh race of the 1998 Formula 1 World Championship . Michael Schumacher took first place ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella and Eddie Irvine .
report
background
The Williams team brought an improved version of their emergency vehicle to the race, which among other things had an extended wheelbase and was therefore unofficially called the Williams FW20b instead of the Williams FW20 .
training
Friday training
As in previous weekends, Mika Häkkinen set the fastest time with 1: 19.613, followed by Michael Schumacher , Jean Alesi , David Coulthard and Giancarlo Fisichella , all of whom were within a second behind the Finn.
All drivers were within three and a half seconds behind the best time.
Saturday training
Just like the day before, Häkkinen and his team mate Coulthard set the fastest time with 1: 18.741, followed by the two Schumacher brothers and Fisichella.
All drivers were within four seconds behind the McLaren duo.
Qualifying
This time the Scot was able to prevail by almost seven hundredths ahead of Häkkinen, followed by Schumacher, Fisichella and the second Schumacher, Ralf. It was his third pole position this season, which he only secured shortly before the end. To the chagrin of his teammate, who was always held up by the traffic in front of him during his fast times. Schumacher was surprised by his narrow deficit of almost two tenths, especially since he and Irvine announced on the evening before qualifying that this race was very important for the season.
All drivers were within four seconds.
Warm-up
Somewhat surprisingly, Heinz-Harald Frentzen was able to get the fastest lap with 1: 21.940 in front of Häkkinen and Coulthard. Eddie Irvine had problems and only achieved a time that was almost nine seconds behind the German's time.
All drivers, with the exception of Irvine, were within four and a half seconds of the fastest time.
run
First start
Michael Schumacher had a perfect start and was able to overtake Häkkinen before the first corner, while his brother Ralf stalled his engine at the start. While entering the first corner, the Virage Senna , Alesi was pushed to the left by Trulli, whereupon the Frenchman had to brake hard. As a result, Wurz tries to avoid the grass on the left, but it was already too late: Wurz hits Alesi's left front wheel, is pressed to the left and overturns through the gravel, as the bolide digs in, three times. Wurz was able to get out unscathed and also switch to the replacement car and continue the race because the race was interrupted and restarted. Alesi and Trulli were also able to switch to the replacement car, Herbert was lucky that the mechanic was able to repair the damaged suspension on his car before the restart, as Alesi got the replacement car.
Second start
Once again, Häkkinen has gotten off to a bad start and is passed way back to the end. Later it turned out that the gearbox got stuck in one gear, which a little later also led to the abandonment of the leader in the world championship. This time Schumacher also got off to a bad start and was immediately overtaken by Fisichella. Even at the second start there was a collision: Ralf Schumacher drove, like Wurz at the first start, over the grass and turned in the middle of the curve. This created a traffic jam behind him and Panis caught Alesi's car and came to a stop just above his helmet. Alesi got away with the shock, with him four other drivers had to give up after not even a full lap: Häkkinen, Ralf Schumacher, Trulli and Toranosuke Takagi , who had problems with the power transmission to the wheels.
In order to avoid a third start, which could have resulted in even more failures (and in order not to further strain the clutches of the racing cars), the safety car was called onto the track. Even before the safety car was forbidden to overtake, Michael Schumacher was able to regain his place from Fisichella. On the fifth lap, while Coulthard was in the lead, the safety car came into the pits and the race was cleared. Michael Schumacher went straight to the fight for first place with the Scotsman, which ended on lap 13 as the safety car hit the track again. The reason this time was that Pedro Diniz spread several larger pieces of the turf on the track after a take-off. The safety car returned to the pits on lap 18, but Coulthard could no longer accelerate because he too had problems with the power transmission. Meanwhile Salo hit the Walls of Champions and Herbert turns out. After only 18 laps, the safety car had to go out for the third time to ensure order. Schumacher took advantage of the situation and stopped in the pits. When exiting the pit, there was a scandal: Schumacher shot straight towards Frentzen and pushed him out onto the grass. This turned into the gravel bed and then had to give up. A visibly excited Patrick Head , the chief engineer at Williams, rushed to the Ferrari team boss Jean Todt and confronted him about this unsportsmanlike action. He said: "We [Williams] will do everything possible to get him [Schumacher] out of the running, and we will not tolerate this situation!" . Heads' attempt will be rewarded later as Schumacher received a ten-second stop-and-go penalty on lap 35 .
In the 22nd lap the race was opened for the third time, while Fisichella was leading in front of the local hero Villeneuve, Schumacher, Hill, Magnussen and Nakano. Villeneuve tried to pass Fisichella on the outside in the first corner, but failed miserably and lost a few places as he slipped into the gravel. During this action he damaged his rear wing. After 13 laps Schumacher received a penalty for his grossly unsporting behavior, which made him fall behind Hill. However, Hill was unable to defend himself for long, and so Schumacher was able to regain second place after just one lap. On the 45th lap, Schumacher was able to secure the lead in the race as Fisichella had to make his only pit stop. Fisichella came back in second and finished this again in this position. Schumacher wins ahead of Fisichella and Irvine in one of the most chaotic races in Formula 1 history. Jan Magnussen was able to achieve his only point with sixth place. But his luck only held back for a short time, as he was released shortly after the weekend in Canada and thus his Formula 1 adventure was ended. It was not until five years later that a Dane, Nicolas Kiesa, returned to Formula 1 and 16 years later Magnussen's son, Kevin Magnussen , was able to get hold of a Formula 1 cockpit.
