After the Monaco Grand Prix , Nico Rosberg led the drivers' standings with 24 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 40 points ahead of Daniel Ricciardo . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led with 67 points ahead of Ferrari and with 76 points ahead of Red Bull .

At the Canadian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow), P Zero Supersoft (red) and P Zero Ultrasoft (purple), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

Before Turn 1 and between Turn 9 and the Pits Hairpin , the walls at the edge of the track were renewed and new safety fences were installed. In the braking zone of turn 1 , the track was also re-asphalted and in turn 9 the strip behind the curbs was renewed.

There were two DRS zones that remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone began after the pits hairpin , exactly 55 meters before the next full throttle curve. The second zone was on the start-finish straight and began 70 meters after the last corner. Just like at the season opener in Australia , there was only one measuring point for both DRS zones , so that in the event of a successful overtaking maneuver in the first zone, the driver ahead could use the DRS again in the second zone.

Daniil Kwjat (seven), Marcus Ericsson , Max Verstappen (six each), Valtteri Bottas , Nico Hülkenberg , Pascal Wehrlein (four each), Kimi Räikkönen (three), Fernando Alonso , Esteban Gutiérrez , Romain Grosjean , Hamilton, Rio Haryanto and Felipe Nasr (two of each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Hamilton (four times), Raikkonen, Alonso, Jenson Button , Sebastian Vettel and Ricciardo (once each), six former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Gerd Ennser (DEU), Roger Peart (CAN), Steve Stringwell (GBR) and Derek Warwick (GBR) acted as race stewards .

Before the Grand Prix it became known that Ferrari was using a further developed version of the Ferrari 059/5 during the race , Ferrari redesigned the turbocharger. Honda also delivered an improved turbocharger for the RA616H to McLaren. Both manufacturers invested two of the tokens still available for the changes.

training

In the first free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time in 1: 14.755 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Vettel. The training had to be interrupted after an accident by Felipe Massa due to a defect in the DRS.

In the second free practice session, Hamilton was also fastest with a lap time of 1: 14.212 minutes ahead of Vettel and Rosberg.

In the third free practice session, Vettel set the fastest time in 1: 13.919 minutes ahead of Verstappen and Rosberg. It started to rain a few minutes before the end of the training session, whereupon Kevin Magnussen hit the bar. The training was interrupted and not restarted.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Rosberg was the fastest. Magnussen was unable to drive a lap due to the damage that his vehicle had suffered in the third free practice session and therefore did not qualify for the Grand Prix. However, he was allowed to start from last place on the grid as he was fast enough in free practice. Haryanto turned and hit the barrier, but was then able to drive back slowly to the pits. In addition to Magnussen, both Manor and Sauber drivers and Palmer were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. The second section had to be completed after an accident by Carlos Sainz jr. to be interrupted. Hamilton was fastest. Sainz, the Haas pilots, Kwjat, Button and Pérez were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 12.812 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Vettel. It was Hamilton's 53rd pole position, the fourth of which of the season.

Ericsson and Kwjat were each given a three-place transfer back for causing collisions at the Monaco Grand Prix. Sainz and Magnussen were moved five starting positions down due to premature gear changes.

run

Vettel started better than the two Mercedes drivers and took the lead before the first corner. Rosberg drove next to Hamilton in the Senna-S, while Hamilton's car understeered and there was a slight contact with the front tires. Ricciardo braked behind him , so that Verstappen passed. After contact with Hamilton, Rosberg skipped the third corner and fell back to eighth place. Due to the dirty tires, he also had to let Alonso and Hülkenberg pass during the first lap. Magnussen collided with Nasr in the back of the field, who spun and fell back to last place. At the end of the first lap, Vettel was already more than two seconds ahead of Hamilton, but then skipped the last chicane, so that Hamilton caught up again. Behind them were Verstappen, Ricciardo, Raikkonen, Bottas, Massa, Alonso, Hulkenberg and Rosberg.

On the third lap, Hülkenberg overtook Alonso, and shortly afterwards he also had to let Rosberg pass. Vettel and Hamilton pulled away from the front and after nine laps they had more than eight seconds ahead of Verstappen and Ricciardo, who were driving one behind the other. Verstappen received a radio message telling him not to stop his teammate, but ignored it.

Button parked his vehicle with an engine failure, so the race management called for a virtual safety car phase in the third section of the route. Vettel, Raikkonen used this to switch to Supersoft . Vettel only lost around 13 seconds during the pit stop and fell back to fourth, Raikkonen to 15th. Wehrlein also came to the pit and switched to soft , while Rosberg overtook Hülkenberg. In the twelfth lap, the virtual safety car phase was canceled.

After his pit stop, Vettel drove the same lap times as Hamilton and caught up with the Red Bull drivers, overtaking Ricciardo on lap 17 and Verstappen on lap 18. In the following laps he caught up with Hamilton for several seconds. Rosberg was meanwhile behind Massa, who was too fast on the straight for Rosberg to attack him. Raikkonen overtook Kwjat and then Pérez in the back of the field. Alonso fell back to 15th place due to a problem during the pit stop, where he switched to soft . Palmer gave up the race with a water leak in the pits.

On the 20th lap, Verstappen changed tires and came back on the track in eighth place, just before Raikkonen. One lap later, Ricciardo, who fell behind Raikkonen, stopped, and Rosberg and Hülkenberg also stopped on this lap. Another lap later, Massa changed tires, then Bottas and on lap 24 Hamilton. All of these pilots switched to soft . Vettel meanwhile drove the fastest lap of the race on lap 23.

Rosberg also overtook Pérez on lap 24, who started on soft and had not yet been in the pits. Vettel was leading by 13 seconds over Hamilton, while Verstappen was third, around 25 seconds behind. Räikkönen, Ricciardo, Bottas, Rosberg, Pérez, Massa and Hülkenberg followed at very short intervals. Pérez switched to Supersoft on lap 30 and dropped back to twelfth place.

Raikkonen stopped the Ricciardo and Bottas behind him so that Rosberg caught up, while he drove the fastest lap of the race to date. At the same time, Hamilton shortened the deficit on Vettel and was already less than ten seconds behind him on lap 33. On lap 33, Raikkonen switched to soft and fell back to eighth place. Hamilton drove the fastest lap on lap 36, while Massa finished the race in the pits with an overheated engine. One lap later, Vettel switched to Soft and was then almost eight seconds behind Hamilton in second place. Ricciardo skipped the last chicane and fell behind Bottas, on the 38th lap Ricciardo drove into the pits and switched again to soft . During the pit stop, there was a problem with the right front tire, so Ricciardo lost around five seconds and came back on track in seventh place.

As a result, Vettel drove the fastest lap of the race up to that point several times, but only slightly shortened the gap to Hamilton. Verstappen and Pérez made their last pit stops on lap 46, Verstappen switched to Ultrasoft , Pérez to Soft . Verstappen drove the fastest lap of the race to date on lap 49.

On the 51st lap, Rosberg surprisingly came into the pits again to change tires, as his team determined a gradual loss of air pressure in the right rear tire based on the telemetry data. He switched to soft again and fell back to seventh place. Hülkenberg, who was behind Rosberg, also switched to soft again on the same lap . Ricciardo had meanwhile caught up with Raikkonen and put him under pressure. Rosberg drove the fastest race lap and caught up with Ricciardo and Raikkonen, whom he also overtook shortly afterwards. At the top, the gap between Hamilton and Vettel remained constant, but Vettel skipped the last chicane two more times and lost around a second each time.

On the 60th lap, Rosberg again set the fastest race lap and was then within striking distance of Verstappen. Since he had to save fuel, he couldn't put it under pressure every lap. On the penultimate lap, Rosberg overtook Verstappen on the outside when braking into the last chicane, but spun in the process. He continued the race but lost several seconds, while Verstappen passed him again.

Hamilton won the race ahead of Vettel and Bottas. It was Hamilton's second win in a row, with Vettel taking his fourth podium this season. For Bottas it was the first podium since the 2015 Mexican Grand Prix . The remaining points were achieved by Verstappen, Rosberg, Raikkonen, Ricciardo, Hülkenberg, Sainz and Pérez. Due to the failure of Massa there was no longer a driver who scored points in all races of the season.

Rosberg stayed in the drivers' standings ahead of Hamilton, who reduced the gap to nine points. Vettel was now in third place. In the constructors' championship, the first three positions remained unchanged.
