After the US Grand Prix , Nico Rosberg led the drivers' standings with 26 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 104 points ahead of Daniel Ricciardo . With 75 points still to be awarded, only Rosberg and Hamilton had a chance of winning the title, Rosberg could win the title if he scored at least 24 points more than Hamilton in this race. In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led unmatched with 236 points ahead of Red Bull and with 289 points ahead of Ferrari .
At the Mexican Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white), P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .
There were minor changes to the route compared to the previous year , the grass was replaced by asphalt in parts of the run-off zone in turn eight and turn eleven , and the TecPro barrier in turn twelve was reinforced.
There were two DRS zones that remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone was on the start and finish straight and began exactly 425 meters behind the last corner. The second DRS zone began 120 meters after turn three . There was only one measuring point for both DRS zones, where the distance to the vehicle in front was determined; it was at the exit of turn 15 . In the event of a successful overtaking maneuver on the start and finish straight, the driver in front was allowed to use the DRS again in the second zone.
Daniil Kwjat (seven), Felipe Nasr , Rosberg (six each), Esteban Gutiérrez , (five), Valtteri Bottas , Sebastian Vettel , Pascal Wehrlein (four each), Sergio Pérez , Kimi Räikkönen , Max Verstappen (three each), Fernando Alonso , Marcus Ericsson , Romain Grosjean , Kevin Magnussen , Nico Hülkenberg , Esteban Ocon and Jolyon Palmer (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.
