The 2016 European Grand Prix (officially 2016 Formula 1 Grand Prix of Europe ) took place on June 19 at the Baku City Circuit in Baku ( Azerbaijan ) and was the eighth race of the 2016 Formula 1 World Championship .

report

backgrounds

After the Canadian Grand Prix , Nico Rosberg led the drivers' standings with nine points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and with 38 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with 76 points and Red Bull with 93 points .

At the European Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white), P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

There were two DRS zones on the route , but only one measuring point, as in Australia and Canada. In the event of a successful overtaking maneuver in the zone passed through first, the driver in front was allowed to use the DRS again in the next zone. The measuring point for both zones was in curve 20 ; due to the arrangement of the DRS zones, the second zone was passed through after the measuring point and then the first zone. The first zone began 630 meters before turn three , the second zone was on the start-finish straight, 730 meters before turn one .

Daniil Kwjat (seven), Marcus Ericsson , Max Verstappen (six each), Valtteri Bottas , Nico Hülkenberg , Pascal Wehrlein (four each), Kimi Räikkönen (three), Fernando Alonso , Esteban Gutiérrez , Romain Grosjean , Hamilton, Rio Haryanto and Felipe Nasr (two of each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Alonso (three times), Vettel (twice) and Felipe Massa (once) three former winners competed for this Grand Prix. Alonso won the race twice when it was held at the Nürburgring until 2007 , the other race victories were achieved at the Valencia Street Circuit , where the European Grand Prix took place from 2008 to 2012.

Derek Daly (IRL), Gerd Ennser (DEU), Anar Schukurow (AZE) and Vincenzo Spano (VEN) acted as race commissioners .

training

Hamilton was fastest in the first free practice with a lap time of 1: 46.435 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Bottas. The training had to be interrupted after an accident by Daniel Ricciardo .

Hamilton also set the fastest time in the second free practice, this time in 1: 44.223 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Pérez.

In the third free practice, Hamilton again set the fastest time in 1: 44.352 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Hülkenberg. Pérez hit the barrier a few seconds before the end of the training session.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Rosberg was the fastest. The Renault drivers, Ericsson, Jenson Button and both Manor drivers were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Rosberg was again fastest. Nasr, the Haas pilots, Alonso, Carlos Sainz Jr. and Hulkenberg were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Training was interrupted around two minutes before the end because Hamilton crashed into the track barrier. With a lap time of 1: 42.758 minutes, Rosberg set the fastest time ahead of Pérez and Ricciardo. It was the 25th pole position for Rosberg.

Pérez and Magnussen were moved five starting positions down due to a premature gearbox change. Since Magnussen's suspension setup was also changed, he had to start from the pit lane.

run

At the start, the positions at the top remained unchanged. Gutiérrez braked in the first corner and touched Hülkenberg, but both were able to continue.

Verstappen overtook Kwjat on the second lap, one lap later Bottas and Hamilton passed Kwjat, another lap later Grosjean too. Bottas and Hamilton also overtook Verstappen on the fifth lap, before that Vettel passed Ricciardo and was now second. Massa and Ricciardo were the first drivers to go into the pits to change tires and switch to the soft compound. When Ricciardo pitted, Raikkonen stayed in his slipstream and then crossed the white line. He received a five-second time penalty for this offense.

On the eighth lap, Raikkonen pitted. Ricciardo, who had dropped back into midfield after his early pit stop, overtook Wehrlein and Grosjean one after the other. One lap later, Raikkonen and Massa Wehrlein also overtook, while Hamilton overtook Bottas in the front of the field. Ricciardo caught up with Hülkenberg and overtook him on lap 13. In the meantime, Verstappen changed tires and passed Ericsson and Wehrlein shortly afterwards.

Hamilton pitted on lap 15 and also switched to the soft mixture, falling back to ninth place. Räikkönen caught up with Hülkenberg and overtook him on lap 16. Pérez pitted to change tires, switched to soft and dropped back to eighth place. After a driving error, Nasr hit the barrier with the right rear tire, but continued the race. Bottas changed his tires on lap 19 and returned to the track just before Verstappen, Pérez and Hamilton overtook Massa in quick succession.

On lap 20 Vettel, Hülkenberg and Verstappen went to the pits to change tires, Vettel switched to soft , Hulkenberg to super soft and Verstappen to medium . A lap later, Rosberg switched to Soft , he stayed in the lead. Pérez and Hamilton also overtook Ricciardo, who, like his team-mate , switched to Medium immediately afterwards . He fell behind Sainz, whom he overtook three laps later.

Vettel overtook Raikkonen on lap 28 and then drove the fastest lap of the race to date. Sainz retired on lap 32 with a break in the suspension, a few laps later Wehrlein retired with a brake failure. Shortly afterwards, Verstappen overtook Massa, Ricciardo passed Hulkenberg. Hulkenberg also had to let Verstappen pass with his diminishing tires.

Although Pérez was already ahead of him due to the five-second penalty against Raikkonen, he still overtook him on the last lap.

Rosberg won the race ahead of Vettel and Pérez. It was the 19th victory for Rosberg in the Formula 1 World Championship, including the fifth of the season. Vettel achieved the fifth, Pérez the second podium of the season. Räikkönen, Hamilton, Bottas, Ricciardo, Verstappen, Hulkenberg and Massa achieved the remaining points.

The first three places in the drivers 'and constructors' championships remained unchanged.
