The Malaysian Grand Prix 2016 (officially 2016 Formula One Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix ) took place on 2 October at the Sepang International Circuit in Sepang instead and was the sixteenth race of the Formula 1 World Championship in 2016 .
report
backgrounds
After the Singapore Grand Prix , Nico Rosberg led the drivers' standings with eight points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 94 points ahead of Daniel Ricciardo . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led with 222 points ahead of Red Bull and with 237 points ahead of Ferrari .
At the Malaysian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (orange), P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Soft (yellow) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .
In the run-up to the race, significant changes were made to the track compared to last year. Curve two , curve three , curve four , curve five , curve six , curve nine , curve twelve and curve 13 were each raised on the outside in order to enable different driving lines and, as a result, overtaking maneuvers on the outside. The inside of curve 15 has been raised by one meter so that it is now four percent negative instead of two percent positive. This should allow rainwater to run off better and prevent the formation of puddles on the inside of the curve. The route length remained unchanged despite these numerous measures. In addition, the entire route was re-paved.
The DRS zones remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone was on the back straight and started 104 meters after turn 14 . The measuring point for this zone was 54 meters after turn twelve . The second DRS zone was on the immediately following start and finish straight and began 28 meters behind turn 15 . In contrast to previous years, there was no separate measuring point for the second DRS zone, but the measuring point of the first DRS zone was used. It could happen that after an overtaking maneuver in the first zone, the pilot who was then in front was allowed to use the DRS again in the second zone.
The following drivers started the race weekend with penalty points: Felipe Nasr (six), Esteban Gutiérrez , Daniil Kwjat , Kimi Räikkönen (five each), Valtteri Bottas , Rosberg, Pascal Wehrlein (four each), Sergio Pérez , Max Verstappen (three each), Fernando Alonso , Marcus Ericsson , Romain Grosjean , Nico Hülkenberg , Esteban Ocon , Jolyon Palmer and Sebastian Vettel (two each).
With Vettel (four times), Alonso (three times), Raikkonen (twice), Jenson Button and Hamilton (once each), five former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
Steve Chopping (AUS), James Leong Weng Hoong (MAS), Tim Mayer (USA) and Derek Warwick (GBR) acted as race stewards .
McLaren used a further developed drive unit for the first time at this Grand Prix. The engine block became lighter and more reliable, and the exhaust was redesigned. Honda used two of the three tokens still available for this purpose . However, only Alonso used this drive unit in free practice, Button contested the entire race weekend with the old version, which was installed again at Alonso on Saturday.
training
In the first free practice, Rosberg set the fastest time in 1: 35.227 minutes, ahead of Hamilton and Raikkonen. With that, Rosberg drove more than four seconds faster than the best lap time in the previous year , which he had set in third free practice. Practice had to be interrupted for around 25 minutes after Kevin Magnussen's Renault caught fire in the pit lane due to a gas leak.
In the second free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 34.944 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Vettel.
In the third free practice session, Hamilton was fastest in 1: 34.434 minutes ahead of Verstappen and Rosberg.
Qualifying
The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Hamilton was fastest. Alonso, the Manor drivers, Palmer and the Sauber drivers were eliminated.
The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton was again fastest. The Toro Rosso drivers, Magnussen, both Haas drivers and Bottas were eliminated.
The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 32.850 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Verstappen. It was Hamilton's 57th pole position, the eighth of the season.
Alonso was moved a total of 45 starting places down for the use of the eighth internal combustion engine, the eighth and ninth units of the turbocharger and MGU-H as well as the seventh unit of the energy storage and control electronics.
run
Ricciardo won the race ahead of Verstappen and Rosberg. It was Ricciardo's fourth victory in the Formula 1 World Championship and the first since the 2014 Belgian Grand Prix . Verstappen achieved the fifth and Rosberg the eleventh podium finish of the season. The remaining points were achieved by Raikkonen, Bottas, Pérez, Alonso, Hülkenberg, Button and Palmer. Palmer scored the first world championship point in his Formula 1 career.
In the drivers 'and constructors' championships, the first three positions remained unchanged.
