Federal Association of the Arameans
The Federal Association of Arameans in Germany (BVDAD; Aramaic ܚܘܝܕܐ ܕܣܘܪ̈ܝܝܐ ܒܐܠܡܢܝܐ) is the umbrella organization of the Aramaic associations and the political representation of the Aramaic Christians living in Germany (called Suryoye , also known as Assyrians or Chaldeans ). The federal association is committed to social, cultural and political issues and at the same time promotes the preservation of the Aramaic culture. Legally, it is a non-governmental organization (NGO).
The Federal Association of Arameans is part of the World Council of Arameans (Syriacs), which, according to its own information, functions as a holistic institution and representation of the Arameans in the world. In addition to the Federal Association of Arameans in Germany, there are corresponding representations in Sweden, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Australia, America, Austria, Great Britain and Syria.

As early as 2012, the Arameans living in Ahlen wanted to return to their original family names. The background to this was the compulsory imposition of Turkish family names in Turkey, which affected not only the Turks but also all non-Turkish minorities. Law No. 2525 , which came into force on January 2, 1935, is still in force today.
The federal association then discussed, together with Reinhold Sendker (CDU), member of the Bundestag, the possibility of a name change, which he implemented with particular commitment to the representatives of the federal and state governments.
After an extensive dialogue, the Federal Cabinet and the Federal Council approved a name change for the Arameans living in Germany. They now have the right to take back their original family names in the form of an administrative regulation (No. 44a NamÄndVwV).
