backgrounds

After the Mexican Grand Prix , Nico Rosberg led the drivers' standings with 19 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 107 points ahead of Daniel Ricciardo . So with 50 points still to be awarded only Rosberg and Hamilton had a chance of winning the title, Rosberg could win the title if he scored at least six points more than Hamilton in this race. In the constructors' championship, Mercedes was unassailable with 252 points ahead of Red Bull and 314 points ahead of Ferrari .

At the Brazilian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (orange), P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Soft (yellow), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

The two DRS zones remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone began 20 meters after the Senna-S , the measuring point is at the apex of curve two , the right -hand bend of the Senna-S . The measuring point for the second DRS zone, which was on the start-finish straight , was 30 meters after the Junção , and the DRS could then be activated 60 meters after turn 15 , the last bend before the start-finish line.

McLaren contested his 800th race in the Formula 1 World Championship at this Grand Prix.

Daniil Kwjat (eight), Felipe Nasr , Rosberg, Sebastian Vettel (six each), Esteban Gutiérrez (five), Valtteri Bottas , Max Verstappen , Pascal Wehrlein (four each), Sergio Pérez , Kimi Räikkönen (three each), Fernando Alonso , Marcus Ericsson , Romain Grosjean , Kevin Magnussen , Nico Hülkenberg , Esteban Ocon , Jolyon Palmer (two each) and Carlos Sainz jr. went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Felipe Massa , Vettel, Rosberg (twice each), Räikkönen and Jenson Button (once each) five former winners competed in this race.

Felipe Giaffone (BRA), Tim Mayer (USA), Mika Salo (FIN) and Nish Shetty (SIN) acted as race stewards.

free training

In the third free practice, Rosberg set the fastest time in 1: 11.740 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Vettel.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Hamilton was fastest. The Sauber and Manor pilots, Magnussen and Button were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton was fastest here too. Palmer, the Toro Rosso and Williams drivers and Gutiérrez were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 10.736 minutes, ahead of Rosberg and Raikkonen. It was Hamilton's 60th pole position, eleventh of the season.

Ocon was moved back three starting positions because he had obstructed Palmer in Q1.

run

As it was raining heavily at the time of the start of the race, the race management decided, for safety reasons, not to start the Grand Prix and instead start behind the safety car .

The race was released after seven laps. On the tenth lap, Ericsson crashed his car against the barrier . The safety car was sent out again to rescue the vehicle.

When the race was reopened on lap 19, there was another accident when Raikkonen lost control of his vehicle and also crashed into the track barrier. The race management then decided to interrupt the race.

After the restart, the race was interrupted again on the 28th lap due to heavy rain and restarted after about 35 minutes of interruption.

On the 50th lap the safety car was sent out again after Massa crashed into the track barrier. On lap 54, Verstappen pitted and switched to fresh rain tires. He fell back in eleventh place. Hamilton led ahead of Rosberg, Pérez, Sainz, Vettel, Nasr, Hülkenberg, Ocon, Kwjat and Ricciardo.

Verstappen took advantage of his fresh rain tires and moved up to third place after the race was released.

Hamilton won the race ahead of Rosberg and Verstappen. It was the ninth win of the season and the 52nd victory for Hamilton in the Formula 1 World Championship. Rosberg achieved the 15th podium finish of the season, so Mercedes achieved a double victory for the sixth time in 2016. For Verstappen it was the seventh podium finish of the season. The remaining points were achieved by Pérez, Vettel, Sainz, Hülkenberg, Ricciardo, Nasr and Alonso. It was the first points for Nasr and the Sauber team this season. Verstappen drove the fastest lap of the race; at 19 years and 44 days, he was the youngest driver to have achieved this before.

The top three positions in the drivers 'and constructors' championships remained unchanged.
