The race was released after seven laps. On the tenth lap, Ericsson crashed his car against the barrier . The safety car was sent out again to rescue the vehicle.
When the race was reopened on lap 19, there was another accident when Raikkonen lost control of his vehicle and also crashed into the track barrier. The race management then decided to interrupt the race.
After the restart, the race was interrupted again on the 28th lap due to heavy rain and restarted after about 35 minutes of interruption.
On the 50th lap the safety car was sent out again after Massa crashed into the track barrier. On lap 54, Verstappen pitted and switched to fresh rain tires. He fell back in eleventh place. Hamilton led ahead of Rosberg, Pérez, Sainz, Vettel, Nasr, Hülkenberg, Ocon, Kwjat and Ricciardo.
