free training

The first free practice took place under changing weather conditions. While it was raining at the beginning, the track partially dried out towards the end of the training session. With a lap time of 1: 16.142 minutes, Albon was fastest ahead of Bottas and Leclerc, but with an accident also caused the training to be terminated prematurely.

In the second free practice session, which took place on a dry track, Vettel set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 09.217 minutes ahead of Leclerc and Verstappen. The training was briefly interrupted due to an accident involving Robert Kubica .

In the third free practice session, Hamilton was fastest in 1: 08.320 minutes ahead of Verstappen and Leclerc.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Verstappen was fastest. Sainz failed to set a lap time due to a technical problem with his car and did not qualify for the Grand Prix. Next to him, the two Williams pilots, Stroll and Kwjat, were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest drivers qualified for the third part of the qualifying and had to start the race with the tires used here, all other drivers had a free choice of tires for the start of the race. Leclerc set his lap time on the medium compound, all other pilots on the soft compound. Verstappen was again fastest. Pérez, the Renault drivers, Giovinazzi and Lando Norris were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Verstappen set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 07.508 minutes ahead of Vettel and Hamilton. It was the second pole position for Verstappen in the Formula 1 World Championship after the 2019 Hungarian Grand Prix .

Leclerc was moved back ten starting positions this season because of the use of the fourth combustion engine.

run

Verstappen won the race ahead of Gasly and Sainz. It was the eighth victory for Verstappen in the Formula 1 World Championship. Gasly and Sainz each achieved their first podium finishes. Scuderia Toro Rosso achieved their second podium finish of the season, McLaren the first since the 2014 Australian Grand Prix . The remaining points were placed by Raikkonen, Giovinazzi, Ricciardo, Hamilton, Norris, Pérez and Kwjat. Since Bottas had achieved the fastest race lap but did not finish, none of the drivers received the additional point.

Hamilton, who originally finished third, was subsequently given a five-second time penalty for causing a collision with Albon, and he was also given two penalty points.

The first two positions in the drivers' standings were already clear before the race, and Verstappen was now third again. In the constructors' championship, the first three positions were also determined before the race.
