The Bahrain Grand Prix 2019 (official Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix 2019 ) took place on 31 March at the Bahrain International Circuit in as-Sachir place and was the second race of the Formula 1 World Championship in 2019 .

After the Australian Grand Prix , Valtteri Bottas led the drivers' standings with eight points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and eleven points ahead of Max Verstappen . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with 22 points and Red Bull Racing with 29 points .
At the Bahrain Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (white, compound C1 ), P Zero Medium (yellow, C2 ) and P Zero Soft (red, C3 ) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full- Wets (blue) available.
Compared to the previous year, a third DRS zone was added. It began immediately after turn three , the associated measuring point was at the end of the start-finish straight , 50 meters before turn one . The other two DRS zones remained unchanged compared to the previous year: The first zone began at the beginning of the back straight, 50 meters after turn ten , the measuring point for this zone was ten meters before turn nine . The second zone began on the start-finish straight, 170 meters after turn 15 , the associated measuring point was 108 meters before turn 14 .
Romain Grosjean , Lance Stroll , Verstappen (seven each), Sergio Pérez , Sebastian Vettel (five each), Bottas, Pierre Gasly (four each), Nico Hülkenberg , Carlos Sainz jr. (three each), Kevin Magnussen and Kimi Räikkönen (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.
With Vettel (four times) and Hamilton (twice) two former winners competed at this Grand Prix.
free training
In the first free practice, Charles Leclerc set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 30.354 minutes ahead of Vettel and Bottas.
In the second free practice, Vettel was fastest with a lap time of 1: 28.846 minutes ahead of Leclerc and Hamilton.
In the third free practice session, Leclerc set the fastest time again, this time with a lap time of 1: 29.569 minutes. Vettel was second ahead of Hamilton.
Qualifying
The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Leclerc was the fastest. The Williams pilots, Stroll, Hülkenberg and Antonio Giovinazzi were eliminated.
The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Leclerc was again fastest. The Toro Rosso drivers, Pérez, Gasly and Daniel Ricciardo were eliminated.
The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Leclerc set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 27.866 minutes ahead of Vettel and Hamilton. It was Leclerc's first pole position in the Formula 1 World Championship and the fastest lap time ever achieved on this track.
Grosjean was moved three positions back because he interfered with Lando Norris in Q1. He also received one penalty point.

Hamilton won the race ahead of Bottas and Leclerc. It was the 74th victory for Hamilton in the Formula 1 World Championship. It was Leclerc's first podium finish. The remaining points were placed by Verstappen, Vettel, Norris, Raikkonen, Gasly, Alexander Albon and Pérez. Norris and Albon scored their first points in the Formula 1 World Championship. As Leclerc set the fastest lap and finished in the top ten, he received an additional point.
Bottas remained in the lead in the drivers' championship, but Hamilton caught up. Verstappen stayed third. The first three positions in the constructors' championship remained unchanged.
