The Williams FW42 is the Formula 1 - racing cars of Williams for the Formula 1 World Championship 2019 . The first pictures of the car were published on February 15, 2019, the vehicle itself made its first appearance on February 20, 2019 as part of the pre-season tests at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya .

The name of the car consists of the initials of the team founder Frank Williams and a consecutive number.

Technology and development

Like all Formula 1 vehicles of 2019, the FW42 is a rear-wheel drive monoposto with a monocoque made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) . In addition to the monocoque, many other parts of the vehicle, including the body parts and the steering wheel, are made of CFRP. The brake discs are also made from a heat-resistant carbon fiber reinforced composite material.

The FW42 is the successor to the FW41 . Since the technical regulations for the 2019 season remained largely stable, the vehicle is largely a further development of the previous model.

The FW42 is driven by a in the center of the vehicle built-in 1.6-liter V-6 engine of Mercedes with a turbocharger and a 120  kW strong electric motor , so it is a hybrid electric vehicle . The car's sequential gearbox has eight gears. The gear change is triggered by paddles on the steering wheel. The vehicle has only two pedals, an accelerator pedal (right) and a brake pedal (left). Just like many other functions, the clutch , which is only used when starting from a standstill, is operated via a lever on the steering wheel.

The total width of the vehicle is 2000 mm, the width between the front and rear axles 1600 mm, the height 950 mm. The front wing is 2000 mm wide, the rear wing 1050 mm wide and 820 mm high. The diffuser has a total height of 175 mm and a width of 1050 mm. The car is equipped with 305 mm wide front tires and 405 mm wide rear tires from the standard supplier Pirelli on 13-inch wheels.

Like all Formula 1 vehicles, the FW42 has had a Drag Reduction System (DRS) since 2011 , which reduces the drag of the vehicle on the straights by flattening part of the rear wing if it is allowed to be used. The DRS is also activated with a switch on the steering wheel of the car.

The FW42 is equipped with the Halo system for additional protection for the driver's head .

The FW42 was the last vehicle to be completed in the 2019 Formula 1 World Championship. The team therefore missed the first two of the eight days of official pre-season test drives.

Painting and sponsorship

The FW42 is mainly painted in white and ice blue.

Acronis , Pirelli, PKN Orlen , the telecommunications company ROKiT , Sofina Foods and Unilever (with the Rexona brand ) advertise on the vehicle.

driver

Williams will compete in the 2019 season with drivers Robert Kubica and George Russell . Kubica was a test driver at Williams in 2018 and will return to the Formula 1 World Championship as a regular driver in 2011 after a serious rally accident, Russell makes his Formula 1 debut. The previous regular drivers Lance Stroll and Sergei Sirotkin left the team: Stroll switched to Racing Point , Sirotkin no longer drives in Formula 1.
