The Williams FW27 was the 30th Formula 1 racing car of the Williams F1 Team. The team contested all 19 rounds of the 2005 Formula 1 World Championship with this vehicle .

presentation

The Williams FW27 was presented in Valencia on January 31, 2005 ; the first rounds of demonstrations took place in camera. A day later, the two drivers Mark Webber and Nick Heidfeld tested the FW27 and covered a distance that corresponded to more than one race. The lap times were shorter than those of the competitors from Toyota and McLaren .

Name and livery

With the Williams FW27, Williams retained its previous naming scheme. The name is made up of the initials of the team founder Frank Williams (FW) and a consecutive number.

The FW27 was painted white and blue, with some gray accents. The rear wing end plates, parts of the engine cover, the side pods and the front wing were painted blue, the rest of them white. Larger sponsors were the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) with advertising on the engine cover and above the air inlets of the side pods, as well as HP with areas on the rear wing, the side pods and the front wing. There were stickers of the motor partner BMW on the nose and the engine cover . Other sponsors were the tire supplier Michelin , FedEx , Allianz , Budweiser and Castrol . These logos were also kept in blue or white, so that the paint only consisted of three colors.

Technology and development

The FW27 was the first Williams to emerge under the leadership of Sam Michael . The aim was, among other things, to reduce weight and friction as well as increase rigidity. Like its predecessor, the FW27 had a narrow nose.

The BMW V10 engine with a 90 ° cylinder bank angle was further developed from the P84 of the previous year and carried the designation P84 / 5. It had a displacement of 3.0 liters. The engine block was made of aluminum. At around 19,000 revolutions per minute, it developed 669 kW (910  hp ); he weighed less than 90 kg.

The rules for the 2005 season required the engine to last two race weekends. An engine change before this deadline would have resulted in a starting place penalty of 10 places. BMW therefore paid particular attention to stability during development.

The FW27 was the only vehicle in the field with a six-speed transmission.

It was the last Williams racing car with a BMW engine. From the 2006 season, BMW supplied the Sauber team with engines.

driver

The FW27 was driven by the Australian Mark Webber and the German Nick Heidfeld . Heidfeld, who had only found out about his regular place for the season 20 minutes before the presentation of the FW27, was represented from the Italian Grand Prix due to an injury by substitute driver Antonio Pizzonia , with whom he had competed for the cockpit place before the season .

Webber drove with starting number 7, Heidfeld and Pizzonia with starting number 8.

Season course

The season was less successful than the previous ones. Nevertheless, the team achieved some respectable successes. The FW27 achieved one pole position and four podium positions. The most successful race was the Monaco Grand Prix , in which the drivers finished 2nd and 3rd. Williams scored a total of 66 points and took fifth place in the Constructors' Championship. Webber scored 36 points and was 10th overall, Heidfeld was 11th with 28 points. Pizzonia scored two points and finished 22nd.
