Serhij Fedorowytsch Hruschewskyj ( Ukrainian Сергій Федорович Грушевський ; * 7 October July / 19 October  1830 reg. In Tschyhyryn , Kyiv Governorate , Russian Empire ; † January 27, July / 9 February  1901 reg. In the W Russian Empire) was a Ukrainian Slavist and educator. He was the father of the historian and first President of the Ukrainian People's Republic Mychajlo Hruschewskyj .

Life

Serhiy's father Fedor came from a family from the Chyhyryn district, which consisted mainly of deacons and community servants. From there, Fedor and his family moved to the village of Lisnyky near Kiev , which helped Serhiy get an education.

He studied from 1844 to 1849 at the Theological Seminary in Kiev-Podil and from 1849 to 1855 at the Theological Seminary in Kiev. In 1855 he entered the Kiev Theological Academy, which he graduated in 1859.

He then worked between 1859 and 1860 as a professor of literature at the Theological Seminary in Poltava and from 1860 to 1865 as a professor of the scriptures at the Kiev Theological Seminary. Parallel to his teaching activities, he dealt with ethnography and historical research, some of which was published in the weekly guide for rural pastors .

Between 1865 and 1868 he worked in the Kingdom of Poland . First he was a teacher of Russian language and literature in 1865 at the Russian-Greek-Catholic high school and in 1866 at the Greek-Catholic women's high school in Cholm , where his son Mychajlo was born. In 1867 he was inspector for Russian educational courses in Cholm and in 1868 he taught at the classical grammar school in Łomża . For health reasons he moved with his family to the Caucasus in 1869 and was employed there as a teacher at the Kutaisi classical high school in 1869/70 . From 1870 to 1876 he was inspector and from 1876 to 1878 director of the public schools in Straropol governorate . His son Oleksandr was born in Stavropol in 1877 . Between 1878 and 1901 he was finally director of the public schools in the Terek region .

During his activity in the Caucasus he organized the building of schools and teacher training. In Vladikavkaz he founded an educational museum. He also wrote handbooks and textbooks for schools, including the textbook The First Textbook of the Church Slavonic Language, reprinted more than 30 times .

In addition to numerous other awards, Hruschewskyj received the rank of real Councilor of State in 1884 . He died at the age of 70 in Vladikavkaz and was buried there in the 1st city cemetery (the grave has not been preserved).
