The Williams FW26 was the Formula 1 - racing cars of Williams for the Formula 1 2004 season . He followed the Williams FW25 used in the previous season .

As in previous years, the V10 engine came from BMW . The tires continued to be supplied by the French tire manufacturer Michelin .

design

The FW26 stood out due to its unusual front design. Two support structures run to the side of the vehicle nose. The hoped-for improved flow could not be achieved, which is why the nose of the vehicle was replaced by a more conventional solution in the course of the year.

driver

The driver pairing from last year, consisting of Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher , has not been changed. Prior to the 2004 season, Montoya announced he would join McLaren-Mercedes for 2005. Ralf Schumacher's contract also expired at the end of the year, so there was constant speculation about the new driver line-up throughout the season.

During the US Grand Prix in Indianapolis, Ralf Schumacher had a serious accident on lap 10, who crashed backwards on the start-finish straight at about 300 km / h into the wall of the banked curve. Schumacher could not get out of the destroyed car himself and was taken straight to the hospital. He broke a cervical vertebra and only returned for the last three races. He was replaced by Marc Gené and Antonio Pizzonia for the next 6 races .

2004 season

In terms of sport, it was a disappointing season. If you were still within striking distance of Ferrari in the first races (Montoya took 2nd place in Malaysia and 3rd place in Imola), in the course of the year you fell behind BAR-Honda and Renault. The low point was definitely the two races in North America: At the Canadian Grand Prix, both cars were disqualified due to excessive brake ventilation, and Ralf Schumacher had a serious accident at the US Grand Prix. He only returned for the last three races, where he was able to claim second place (Japanese Grand Prix) behind his brother Michael and ahead of Jenson Button, which was his only podium finish. Juan-Pablo Montoya achieved the only victory in the last race in Brazil. Montoya finished the season with 58 points in 5th place, while Schumacher got 24 points in the 12 races and was 9th in the overall standings. Pizzonia scored 6 points. Williams-BMW ended the year in a disappointing 4th place with 88 points.
