Alexander "Alex" Albon (born March 23, 1996 in London ) is a British - Thai racing driver . In 2010 he became European kart champion. He started in 2017 and 2018 in the FIA Formula 2 Championship , which he finished third in 2018. In 2019 he made his debut in Formula 1 .

Career

Albon began his motorsport career in karting , in which he remained active until 2011. He won several kart championships in Great Britain. In 2010 he won the CIK-FIA World Cup and the CIK-FIA European Championship in the KF3 class. In 2011 he finished second in the KF1 class of the WSK Euro Series and the CIK-FIA World Championship.

In 2012 Albon switched to formula racing and received a cockpit in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup at EPIC Racing . He remained without points and reached 38th place overall. In addition, he started for EPIC 2012 in the Alpine Formula Renault . Here he finished 16th in the drivers' championship with a fifth place as the best result. At the end of the season, his sponsorship by Red Bull ended and he was accepted into the Lotus sponsorship program. In 2013, Albon moved to KTR within the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup . With a fifth place as the best result, he improved to 16th place in the overall classification. He also took part in two North European Formula Renault events . He achieved a podium placement with a second place. In 2014 Albon stayed with KTR in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup. He achieved three podiums and, as the best driver without a win, was third overall. He also completed three racing weekends in the northern European Formula Renault and won one race.

In 2015 Albon moved to Signature in the European Formula 3 championship . He finished second three times and finished the season in seventh place in the drivers' standings. In 2016 , Albon received a cockpit for the GP3 series at the ART Grand Prix . With four wins, no driver has won more races than him. Nevertheless, he was defeated in the championship by his teammate Charles Leclerc and finished second overall with 177 to 202 points.

In 2017 , Albon stayed at ART Grand Prix and switched to the FIA Formula 2 championship . He achieved his best race results with two second places. He finished the championship with 84 points in 10th place. In 2018 he started again in Formula 2 for DAMS . He finished the season in third place.

For the FIA Formula E Championship 2018/19 , Albon originally had a contract with Nissan e.dams . Albon was registered as a regular driver on the official registration list for the official test drives before the season and also traveled to Valencia. However, he left the test drives prematurely without getting into the car as he began negotiations with Scuderia Toro Rosso with the aim of contesting the 2019 Formula 1 World Championship for the team. Less than three weeks before the start of the season, Nissan finally announced the termination of the contract with Albon. Toro Rosso then confirmed Albon for the 2019 Formula 1 World Championship. This made Albon the first Thai Formula 1 driver since Prince Bira . For his career he chose 23 as his permanent starting number. He finished his debut race in Australia in 14th place. He then scored his first points in ninth place in Bahrain . His best result for Scuderia Toro Rosso came in sixth at the German Grand Prix . After the Hungarian Grand Prix it was announced that he would be starting the Belgian Grand Prix for sister team Red Bull Racing as a new team-mate of Max Verstappen . There he replaced Pierre Gasly , who moved back to Toro Rosso. At the Belgian Grand Prix , his first race for Red Bull, he finished fifth. In Japan he achieved his best result to date in fourth. At the end of the season he finished eighth overall with 92 points.

Also in 2020 Albon starts again for Red Bull. At the Grand Prix of Styria , he equaled his best result of fourth in the Grand Prix of Japan from the previous year. After the seventh race, he is currently fourth in the drivers' standings with 48 points.

Alexander Albon is the son of British racing driver Nigel Albon . He has both British and Thai citizenship as his mother is Thai. In racing, he competes with a Thai license.
