The 1982 Brazilian Grand Prix took place in Rio de Janeiro on March 21, and was the second race of the 1982 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
Since the Argentine Grand Prix was canceled due to financial problems, there was a break of around two months between the season opener in South Africa and the second round of the World Cup in Brazil. This interruption was used by many teams to complete the new cars for the 1982 season after they had contested the first race of the season with the previous year's cars. So did Lotus first time the new Type 91 at the start, Alfa Romeo presented the new 182 , Ensign the N181 and Theodore the TY02 .
In contrast, Team Brabham , which was one of the few teams to have already fielded a new vehicle in South Africa, returned to the previous year's BT49 , which was equipped with a conventional naturally aspirated Ford Cosworth engine instead of the BMW turbo engine.
As of this weekend, Ensign driver Roberto Guerrero added 31 participants to the entry list.
training
Alain Prost secured pole position from Gilles Villeneuve and Keke Rosberg . René Arnoux followed in front of Niki Lauda and Carlos Reutemann .
Riccardo Paletti was excluded from the two regular qualification trainings due to a failed pre-qualification, as only 30 pilots were allowed to participate.
run
Villeneuve took the lead ahead of Prost, Arnoux and Rosberg. Behind it followed Riccardo Patrese ahead of Didier Pironi and Nelson Piquet . On the third lap he overtook Rosberg, followed by Piquet, while Pironi fell back to 16th place.
In the sixth lap, Prost also fell behind Patrese and Piquet. On lap nine, Piquet first overtook Patrese and on lap 17 he took second place from Arnoux.
While Villeneuve was still in the lead, Piquet and Rosberg dueled for second place, followed by Patrese, Prost and Watson. This changed on lap 30, when Villeneuve spun out and had to let Piquet take the lead. Shortly afterwards, Patrese also had a lathe. He gave up the race shortly after in the pits due to nausea. This had previously been the cause of his lack of concentration and the resulting spin.
Piquet crossed the finish line first, ahead of Rosberg, Prost and Watson as well as Nigel Mansell and Michele Alboreto .
Due to protests by the FISA- related teams Renault and Ferrari , Piquet and Rosberg were disqualified after the race. Their teams had attached water tanks to the vehicles in order to bring the vehicles to the minimum weight of 580 kilograms, which has been prescribed since this season. Allegedly, the water was used to cool the brakes. The tanks were not filled until after the race, before the cars were weighed in the parc fermé . So they had been too light during the race.
Prost was thus declared the winner. Manfred Winkelhock and Didier Pironi moved up into the points. Prost was also awarded the officially fastest race lap, although both Piquet and Rosberg had completed faster laps.
