Eliseo Salazar (born November 14, 1954 in Santiago de Chile ) is a former Chilean Formula 1 driver. He contested 24 races between 1981 and 1983 and scored three championship points.

Career

After Juan Zanelli, Salazar was the second Chilean to compete in Grand Prix racing. He made for one of the most famous scenes in the recent history of Formula 1. At the German Grand Prix in Hockenheim in 1982 he collided with the leading Nelson Piquet when he tried to overtake him. Both cars were then no longer ready to drive, Piquet, deprived of his chances of victory, beat Salazar in front of the cameras.

Eliseo Salazar started after the end of his career in Formula 1 in the American Indy Racing League . After a serious accident in 2002 on a test drive, he turned to sports car and rally racing. In 2009 he took part in the Dakar Rally for the first time with a McRae prototype . He has been Robby Gordon's team-mate since 2010 and, like him, also drives a converted Hummer H3 .
